Queens Hostage Standoff Ends With Apparent Suicide
After more than 24 hours, a police standoff in Queens ended early Saturday morning in the death of a man who took his estranged wife hostage
Karan Persaud had been holding the woman at gunpoint in her home along the Van Wyck Expressway since very early Friday morning. The standoff ended just before 6 a.m. Saturday.
Police said the woman was able to escape. When officers entered the home, they said they found Persaud, the woman's estranged husband, dead. Police said he killed himself.
The woman was taken to Jamaica Hospital.
The hostage situation began when police responded to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance. At one point, 48-year-old Persaud, a native of Guyana who was released from prison in March, was holding three other people hostage, including the couple's two daughters, but they were released.
The surrounding streets were shut down for hours.
