Ok, so I feel absolutely horrible, but I simply cannot resist the meat temptation any longer. I've been a vegetarian for over a year, but I can barely eat anything that I'm used to eating, and the only thing that I've been craving, consistently, is meat (mind you, before pregnancy, the sight and smell of meat made me gag!). So, I think today I'm going to break down and try maybe turkey or something, but I've heard deli meats are a no-no. Does that mean if I want to get a turkey sandwich at like Cosi, or au bon pain, I can't?

Re: Question
the is the first that I hear deli meats are no good. I ate a lot of ham and cheese sandwiches and it was fine. If that makes you comfortable and it satisfies your craving, than go for it.

Re: Question
I always thought turkey was okay, the deli meats like bologna, salami, corn beef , all the high fat ones are the ones to avoid.

Re: Question
Funny, but my doctor told me not to eat deli meats because not all deli's are good at cleaning the slicers and that bacteria grows. He told me to buy the prepackaged meat or just make sure I use a deli I know is clean.

Yep! That's what mine told me...also they said to microwave it for a few seconds and then put it back into the fridge. The microwave is supposed to kill any bacteria.
ETA: I don't think it has anything to do with fat...it has to do with Listeria.

Re: Question
I've never heard that deli meats were bad, especially turkey. I'm sure maybe really salty meats like ham and salami aren't that great, but turkey should be fine. Go for it and enjoy it!

Re: Question
I just found this online:
The Food and Drug Administration as well as the professionals in the medical field always caution expecting Moms against eating soft cheeses and certain deli meats. The reason being certain foods can become contaminated with bacteria called Listeria. . If you become sick from Listeria, the baby you're carrying could get sick or worse case scenario –it could be fatal. To protect your unborn baby, eat hard cheeses instead of soft cheeses and thoroughly cooked meats while you are pregnant. Symptoms of a bacterial infection can develop from 2 to 30 days after you eat contaminated food. If the infection spreads to your unborn baby, you could start early labor. Here is a list of meats, poultry and fish to avoid while pregnant:
Hot dogs Sausages Deli meat Under cooked meat like beef and chicken Pates Ready to eat cold seafood Raw eggs and raw egg dishes Raw seafood, especially shellfish
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate the contaminated food eaten by pregnant women is estimated to cause mental retardation and blindness in anywhere from 400 to 6,000 infants, and may kill another 80 fetuses and newborns a year, according to the CSPI.
Listeria has been blamed for 2,500 illnesses and 500 deaths a year, and CSPI estimates 1/3 of the deaths involve pregnant women and their fetuses.
Please be very careful about the food you eat, and talk to your physician about the risks of food and food handling and preparation.

Re: Question
AHHH! It's a sign then! NO MEAT! I just don't know if I can handle another hummus sandwich. The thought truly makes me gag. And I know salad isn't giving me the protein I need, though I do eat fish at for dinner every night This is sooooooooo hard. I think I'll just go get some pasta ravioli

Re: Question
I know someone who had a miscarriage from eating deli meats. It was not cared for and packaged correctly when given to her, but I heard it can cause stilll births too. She got listeria monocytes and was extremely sick. No deli meats.
