Shouldn't human and civl rights come before anything? Maybe she wanted to be a single mom. Some women want children and don't necessarily want marriage. I'm not all that familiar with the Catholic church but do you have to be married to have children?
I'm not Catholic but I don't think they are supposed to have premarital sex at all.
You're not but what's to say this woman didn't decide to become artificially inseminated?? That doesn't break the premarital sex law.
I have a LOT of feelings toward the Church and their 'laws' so I'm not going to jump into this discussion, just wanted to point out that there's more than one way to get pregnant.
Actually (although i don't agree with this catholic teaching) the catholic religion doesn't agree with conception via artificial means whatsoever..I learned this during precana...I don't agree with it at all.

Do you think the church would support a single woman having a baby? They are in such opposition to gay rights and gays and lesbians adopting that I would think they would want the traditional model of mother/father for children.
I would be really interested to know what would happen if a woman did get pregnant by artificial insemination...Would she have been fired too?

I'm pretty sure she would be. If you aren't wedded...ring on finger, they prob won't allow it...BUT...diff schools go by diff rules. Its up to the principal in most matters.
It becomes hypocritical because a married couple could have conceived via artificial means yet the school would have no way of knowing...thats delving deep into the argument, but you can understand where i'm coming from.
But i do have to say..the catholic church does do a ton of outreach to single women to help them with their pregnancy...not every place/church condemns the thought of a single mother.

Re: Question...
my question is, what is it there(schools) business to know A... she married, B... she preggo
her job is to teach, not to learn about her life story....
yes, people should practice what they teach but isnt that firing based of moral issues rather work related issues?

I guess moral issues come in to play when working at a religion based institution.

But Catholic schools can make you sign a contract saying you will abide by Catholic teachings and the Bible...So there is so much more to the job if you look at it as setting an example for Catholic children, in which case all aspects of your life can be looked at. I remember one teacher being fired for posing for a bikini magazine just because they didn't like the example that set for the children.

I think this is something that may occur in other work place settings...No?

Re: Question...
i'm surprised - i thought the catholic church was a little less judgemental considering the priest scandal. shoudl she have an abortion or give the child up for adoption? what is worse? having a child is something she choose to do and the school shouldn't have the right to fire her b/c she is pregnant. i have 12 years of catholic school and i thought i've seen it all, but this truly surprises me

Re: Question...
I will try to obtain more details. Please note: this did not take place in New York either. Not sure if that makes any difference.

Being in New York makes no difference...
Something similar happened to an old friend of mine. She was a dancing school teacher - the dancing school was located in the catholic school, the dancing school's owner paid rent to the church. My friend got pregnant and the nuns told the dancing school that they had to fire her because she was pregnant and unmarried. If they didn't fire her they would have had to find a new location.

I'm in a state job, and I know no state employee could be fired for posing for a magazine outside of work time. To me they would have to have an argument about how it would affect performance in the workplace--if it undermines authority, etc.

My little cousin had a teacher who lost her job mid-semester.
Why?
Well, she was pregnant!
WHAT?!
Well, it's a Catholic school...
And she isn't married...
What do you think?
Sounds like a law suit to me

Re: Question...
I would look into it cuz I don't think they can do that unless they are exempt from the laws. Not for nothing but its more common these days for people to have a child together before they get married.
