question

a girl in my office was telling me this horrible story about her friend who just got married 6 months ago and is already filing for divorce!

so we got into this whole debate on if the bride should give the gifts back to the guests?

and i said - no. when i give a gift to a bride and groom its not conditional - its given because they got married that day.

what do you think? what is proper?

Re: question

I hate people. that is my answer.

the last thing I would want someone to deal with on TOP of a divorce, is for them to think they'd have to send 'No thank you notes' as in, no thank you for your gift, b/c there's been a horrible mistake and I am divorcing six months after my wedding.

the THOUGHT of having to do such a thing turns my stomach People have no idea what that feels like...to expect the gift be returned is completely and utterly disgusting.

On the flip side, as the bride, I'd want to return them, b/c I'd feel like a fraud. but there should be NO expectation of it on the part of the guests.

A gift is a gift - no matter what happens months/years later.

Re: question

absolutely 100% no

why should they give their gits back?
SIL was supposed to get married, had a huge engagement party, then broke up w/her fiancee-and some ppl wanted her to go n give back the gifts to ppl

for what reason?

Re: question

definitely not. A divorce is heartbreaking enough - having to sort through the gifts and send each one back - that is just salt on a wound. Plus it is a gift - if people set a time frame on how long a person should be married in order to keep the gift, that seems pretty arbitrary and stupid. So if someone is married 6 months they have to return the gift, 8 months is iffy and if you break the year mark you are good to go? STUPID.

Poor girl Depending on the details of the divorce, I am not sure I would want to keep them.

I agree.

I'm also thinking it would be a PITA to figure out who gave what so many months after the wedding.

No.
And if this happened to one of my friends and she for whatever reason tried to return the gift, I would not accept it.

Re: question

Unfortunately, I have had 2 friends who this happened to, each of them got divorced about 6 months after they were married. They did not return the gifts.
