Question

Just wanted to hear everyones' opinions on this- especially the girls who work in a professional environment.

Today I was bored and looking on Monster just out of curiosity. And I stumbled upon a job listing which appealed to me. It's pays very well and the job responsibilities are similar to what I am doing now. I have been at my current job now for 3.5 years. While I have AMAZING benefits, and tons of vacation time (I vest 3 days per month) I also have a 401K plan and a retirement pension plan as well- I am just losing interest at my job. I work for a huge insurance giant and I am just getting tired of the greedy money hungry guys I work for. But at the same time, my boss is such a sweet person. He is the coolest person I have ever worked for. He lets me take any days I want off, if I am late- he doesn't say anything, I have been slacking so much at work and he knows it but said to me that he understands because I am getting married and I should be enjoying this time. So, he is VERY understanding. Even though he pays me decent, it's not up to him on what I should get paid. This other company I saw would pay about 10K more a year. I am getting greedy. The money would be awesome and I could save SO much. I also think about me going to Europe on my Honeymoon. I need to take 3 weeks off. I don't know if this new place would have all the extra vacation time like I get here. And, I get really cool semi annual bonuses but still does not add up to this other job I saw. And, I'd want everyone from my office to come to my wedding! If I start at a new job, they probably wouldn't come. And, I really don't want to leave my sweetheart boss hanging.

What would you do? Any opinion is valuable. I'd like to hear your input. Thanks for reading girlies!

Re: Question

Being in a VERY similar situation I say just go for it and apply! For all you know you might go on an interview and not like the place! Or you might love it and the benefits might be great! Either way, I would be upfront with them about the upcoming wedding.. Maybe not the first interview but if they call you back for a 2nd one I would bring it up then.. Even if they offer you the position you don't have to take it but it never hurts to see what else is out there! HTH!

That's very good advice. At the same time, I could see myself feeling very guilty if I left. But you are right- I should see if they even call me for an interview. This company is more laid back due to the research I have done. However the only con I have so far is that it's in Patchogue which is FAR from me. I live in Nassau. But my 4cyl is wonderful on gas so I don't think it would be a problem.

Re: Question

tough one. i think at this point in life i would go for the interview and if they wanted to give me the job i would tell them about the 3 weeks honeymoon and see what they say. it would be hard to leave a really cool boss but you have to do what you have to do. in the end it really comes down to more money or a cool job environment. good luck!

I am in the same situation. The benefits where I work are amazing but I know I could make more if I go somewhere else.
I literally was looking yesterday on Monster. I think you should just wait until after you are married. Who knows how much time they will give you at a new place for you honeymoon. I think starting a new job and planning a wedding might be too much.
It sounds like you have the freedom to do whatever you want at work. I really would stick it out until after the wedding.

That's my gut feeling. I am afraid that if I leave here, it will backfire on me somehow. I know I have it pretty good but also know I can make more. While more money would be fabulous I am still surviving on my current salary.

Re: Question

personally i agree with that. in this economy i would think you're better off taking advantage of the perks and benefits at your current company for one more year until after wedding than jumping ship for more money at a new company...it's terrible, but so often the last hired is the first to go, and right now that is the last position you want to be in...

You never know, maybe your current employer would offer you a raise to stay?

Say you go on the interview and land the job. Could you bring that back to your boss now and say I was offered a position at X Company paying X amount and use it as leverage?

Re: Question

IDK. sometimes loving where you are & who you work for mean a little more then money. Although, for me i wouldnt take a job unless im being paid over what i am 'supposed' to be getting paid. But i work that out in my contract. I guess thats the comptroller in me

I say if you need the money & no perks gofor it but if you are happy maybe speak to your boss & tell me that you need a raise. You may lose some perks but it may be worth it to you.

Never tell them the name of the company. just say you went on an interview period.

2010 bride here:

if you feel you can speak with your current boss & be honest with him, maybe the best thing to do is approach with me what you are asking here. i have learned that some bosses love when there long time employees have opportunities to advance.

Re: Question

I don't think there is any harm in going on an interview to see what the place is about. You can tell your boss if you want but you don't have to. See what perks you would get, and then try to work something out with your current boss. If they say they can't do anything for you, then make your decision from there.

Even though you are the one being interviewed, you are also interviewing them. You could love it, or hate it. So you may as well try. Living on Long Island is tough these days so if you can get more money, go for it!!

Re: Question

great advice from all ladies...its a tough one. We are always so loyal but also have to worry about ourselves in the long run. I see no harm in going on an interview. I also think speaking to your boss about a raise would be a great idea. Getting married...possibly buying a home and starting a family cant happen without money so now is the time to ask. If you are a good worker and he see that...he may offer more to you... Asking cant hurt....

Re: Question

This is hard. If I loved my job 10k would not make a difference. After taxes it is a lot less and that amount of money doesn't make up for less vacation (especially in your case where you get so much vacation). Vacation are priceless. I often wish I went into teaching just to have a good amount of vacation. We spend so much time working. 2-3 weeks more vacation is worth 5K more in my pocket but, again, we are all in different circumstances. Only you can decide because everyone's financal situation ands lifestyle is different. I can tell you that I would take a 25K paycut in a second if I could find a rewarding job that gave me more time out of the office. Too bad I am so complacent!

Re: Question

can you pursue it and use it as leverage for a raise? that would be best case scenario.

**edited for stupid typos as usual...

Re: Question

Well, it sounds to me that you love your current job and the only thing that is causing you to pursue this other place is boredom and the extra money. Money does not always lead to happiness. It sounds like you have a very understanding boss and that's important. I can't really say the same for
my boss and I know it would be a more pleasant working environment if I had a more easy going boss.
I would def. check this other place out, though...just to see what they are offering, but I think you will be disappointed.

Re: Question

I can totally understand wanting to wait until after the wedding to look for a new job.. My mom feels I should wait and while I sort of agree I sort of disagree... IMO it all boils down to whether or not you are happy at your job. If you are miserable where you work another year or so could be torture! Also, it all depends on when you plan on having children and whatnot... Some places require you to work with them a year or two before you are entitled to maternity leave...For people who want to have kids right away this would not work out for them.. Then you would have to prolong looking for another job for a FEW years! I guess when I responded I forgot to ask the most important question.. and that is are you happy, or at least content, with where you work? You pointed out some very positive aspects about your job (benefits, cool boss, etc) but there were negative aspects you mentioned as well.. If you are overall okay with your job then I would say stay but if you are not happy then staying until after the wedding is just prolonging the misery and might only make you more stressed when it gets closer to the big day!

You are right. I have seniority over a lot of people so if God forbid they have to cut people, I wouldn't be the fist to go at my current place.
