My Mom and FMIL are giving me a hard time about using a card box at the reception. They feel someone might steal my cards (not family necessarily, but guests of people we invited or staff, etc).
Has anyone heard of this being an issue?
Anyone not using a card box????

Re: QUESTION
maybe try to explain to her where the cardbox is..that people would prob see someone going in and taking the cards
but if she really feels that strongly get one,use it as a display and whenver u get a card tell her she has to hold onto it

Re: QUESTION
This came up with my parents too. I agree that the size and shape of the wedding card box will make it difficult for someone to walk out with it unnoticed. Just to be safe, ours will be set up next to FH's father. he usually doesn't dance so he can keep on eye on it.

Re: QUESTION
I had a card box and did not have a problem w it. I know alot of guests handed me my cards even though we had the box and I would just give them to DH or I would put them in the box. Our box was on a table right between our table and my parents table. How does your hall set up the tables? Maybe if you put yours like mine then they would feel a little bit safer.

Re: QUESTION
I am not using one, but the bridal attendant/butler will be taking them and putting them in the safe in the bridal suite all night.
So I dont have a card bx, but do have something in place in lieu of a cardbox.
Ask the hall what they reccomend.

Re: QUESTION
I don't understand how this would be possible either--its not like they're tiny little things. I'd ask your MOH or BM to keep an eye out. My hawkeye mom will be in charge. :)

Re: QUESTION
We are using one. I plan on having it by our table. Unfortunately I have heard of them being stolen (a friend of a friend's in Florida), there is nothing you can do or know if it's going to happen.

Re: QUESTION
Not only have I heard of it, but Ive seen it actually happen. A friend of the family volunteered to help carry gifts out, and he ended up taking the cardbox and leaving. It was so sad....
I made sure I weighted mine down and didnt have it by ANY door. I also had a designated person kind of 'watching' it during the night. So if you have one, just make sure its in a safe place

Re: QUESTION
If you are going to use one just make sure its in a place thats visible and that someone can keep an eye on it. I didnt have one because i knew my family wouldnt even use it! they are very into HANDING the card to the bride and groom directly (mostly so that you can see that they brought a card) so I didnt have one and just collected my cards in a bridal bag as i walked around to each table to greet all the guests.

That is AWFUL!!! BUT IT DOES HAPPEN!!!!
Personally I would want somethign safe to keep the cards in. With the security training I do.... we always tell them NOT TO EVER TRUST ANYONE WHEN IT COMES TO MONEY!! You just NEVER know!!! it's shocking when it happens... but it's soooo much better to be safe than sorry. And with that many people around... and not paying attention.... you never know what could happen.
I've actually gone up to put my card in a card box before... and I found some cards laying outside the box!! People didn't know where to put the card so one person put it leanig up against it... and then others followed. So when I saw the cards sitting there... I HAD to put them in the box (I was sitting right by it... so as other people came to put their cards in the box... I actually had to help them find the slot to put their cards in). I'm a very honest person and would never steal.... but not everyone is like that... and people could easily walk away with that. You don't necessarily KNOW that every single guest isn't capable of stealing!! Also remember you don't always know the all the 'and guests' either. It's sad but it def does happen.
You don't have to have a card box though... you could use an alternative method. Just make sure it's safe.

Re: QUESTION
I am using one, but I am going to make sure that it is in a very visible spot. I'm just going to have to hope and pray for the best in this case.

How did you weigh it down?

Re: QUESTION
We used a suitcase which was decorative from a craft store for our card box. We didn't have any problems, but it didn't have a slot in it, and was kind of annoying. I would use a card box if I did it again. Some people will still just come up to you, and hand you the cards no matter what. We were missing one card from the wedding. We are not sure if someone took it, or if they didn't give us a gift.
