question about a dog with sore foot pads

Oscar's obedience class takes place in a park on a basketball court. He is so excited to be there that he pulls and pulls on the leash to get to the other dogs. He just wants to play the entire time. His foot pads were pretty sore from last week's class and there was even one small cut. His nails were pretty well filed also. He was better within a day but I bought some conditioning creme for his pads. I was wondering if this will help or if it will just make his pads more sensitive. I use a lot of lotion on my own hands but because I pamper my hands so much, my skin has never been toughened and I can't do things like lift weights unless I wear gloves. I want to treat his paws to this creme but will it prevent him from developing a tough skin that might be necesary?

The class is great but it is such a tough surface. I think the other dogs are having trouble with it also.

I think the foot pads should toughen up and not to be a 'wise guy' but after a few more obedience classes, maybe he wont be pulling so much.

They want us to get there early so he can play before class and get it out of his system!!!

Okay, don't laugh at me for suggesting this: Drs. Foster and Smith (www.drsfostersmith.com) sells cute little doggie booties with tough soles for protection. They are soooooooo cute!

Look for a product called Mushers Sercet. it is like a chapstick for dogs pads. It works great on our pup in the winter he loves to play in the snow but his pads get chewed up so bad...

If you cant find it Let me know I work in the pet industry and can get it for you.

Good luck!!

Re: question about a dog with sore foot pads

my dog had a good sized cut in her pad that we took her to the vet for... they gave me an antibacterial ointment to prevent infection. You can also use neosporin if its cut. the vet told us to keep her activity light for a week or so to fully heal!
