i have to close my bank accounts cause its a NY bank and i live in NJ now.
my question is about the money in my accounts. How do i transfer the funds? do i walk out with mucho dinero in my hand and then go deposit cash into my new account? or does the bank write a check for the full amount in my accounts and i can deposit that?
anyone know? any bankers out there?

Re: question about closing a bank account
ive done both...
depending on how much it is it might be easier and safer to get a check rather than a huge wad of cash

Re: question about closing a bank account
When I closed the account I had at my old bank, there wasn't much in there so I just took the cash. If it's a high amount I would probably get a check.

I'd have them issue you a bank check and then deposit it in my account.

Be careful if they give you a check...
When you deposit it in the NJ bank, it may take a few days to clear...and during that time, you will not have access to your money.....

Re: question about closing a bank account
go to the bank and request a cashiers check for the account you are closing, the bank has to give you a cashiers check, by law, for free when you close out an account. A cahiers check is the same as cash, take that to your new bank anad deposit it and it should be available immediately...
My FH is a banker!! Good luck!!

Not all banks will honor cashier's checks as cash. I really suggest that you talk to someone in the bank where you are opening your new account. If I remember correctly, you said were closing an account in NY and opening an account in NJ...just make sure before you close the account.

get them to make you a check. it's safer and most banks won't charge you for the check if you're making it out to yourself.

I work in a bank.. I know a lot of banks do not honor cashier checks as cash. They may have hold times like any other check.

This isnt true. Banks do not have to give you a check for free... they usually so as a courtesy. IT definitely isnt honored as cash though, especially with all the fraud now. It usually clears faster than a regular personal check, but not immediately.

You will NOT be able to access your money until the cashiers check clear.
Perhaps take some of the money out in cash and the rest in a cashiers check. This way you will have access to some of your money...the amount in cash.

Re: question about closing a bank account
You also can have them wire the money. But just so you know they usually charge you about $25 or so for the wire. But the upside is the money is there and no waiting period like with a check.
