question about crate training and wee wee pads

I just have to ask, since it's driving me nuts thinking about it :) Golem is in his crate while we are at work, and unfortunately we can't come home during the day to let him out. Craig leave anywhere between 1 and 3, and I come home around 6:30. He's still a baby and really can't hold his pee that long, so when I get home, he's already peed in his crate. We have it lined with newspapers and old t-shirts, so it's pretty easy to clean up, but a few people recommended that we use wee wee pades in the crate. Here's my confusion with that though. he already knows that he goes outside to pee - he'll sit by the door to let us know when it's 'time' :) It's just when he's in the crate and no one is there to let him out, obviously he can't go outside and ends up peeing in the crate. Now, if we put wee wee pads in the crate, won't that be working backwards from how we taught him to go outside? Either way, he's still going to the bathroom in his crate, so I'm just not sure if the wee wee pads would make a difference? It would just be during the day when we're not home if we used them... I'm just kinda confused - can anyone help me out here? Thanks!

Re: question about crate training and wee wee pads

what you *can* do is if his crate is the large one (did you go buy the big one or start small?) and you have a divider....make a tad bigger and put wee wee pads on PART of the crate, so he knows to only go in one spot of his crate. I tend to agree with you that it is a step backwards though. Have you thought of getting a play pen type thing to put around his crate so he has both inside his crate nad an area with wee wee pads outside the crate?

I remembered you said you did something liek that with Bailey, and I wonder if it would work with Golem. The only thing that worries me about that is leaving him unattended with soemthing that he might chew and choke on.... He eats everything right now, and as much as we don't want to encourage him going in the crate - I would be concerned that he might try to eat the Wee Wee pad if we weren't there to correct him, and God forbid he got a big enough piece of it....

I'm just baffled right now :)

it wont be unteaching him..... itll just make for easier cleanup in his crate.... but if its already easy, dont bother..... but it IS really easy to clean up with a wee wee pad
