Question about depositing wedding checks

Question about depositing wedding checks

I did not take my new husband's last name and most people wrote out our wedding checks to 'Mr and Mrs so-and-so' or to our first names and my husband's last name.

We are not opening a joint account until both of us are relocated for work to the southern US, which could be 6 months to a year from now (so we don't know what banks will be most convenient for us).

I would like to deposit the checks into my savings account (my hub is a slacker with bills, so I handle the finances!); however; I am assuming I cannot do this b/c my incorrect last name is on the checks. Can I bring our marriage license to the bank and explain, or are they just going to tell me they can't do it?

Thanks!

Re: Question about depositing wedding checks

If you both sign them and you are not trying to defraud anyone, it should be fine.

I signed a lot of my checks with my maiden and new last names together to make it clear. You can use his last name as long as you are not trying to defraud anyone, so i would sign all three names (that's including your first) on the backs of the checks. It shouldn't be a problem to deposit them.

ETA: Bank of America is all over the South where I am if you're looking for a bank to open an account together in NY and transfer once you move.
