we've been engaged for over 6 months already and our wedding is about 8 months away. is it still okay if we have an engagement party? or is it too late?
FI's family lives out of state so there are very few occassions where his family and my family get to mingle. while our families aren't in good terms with each other, it's also not in bad terms - it's more like, the communication between the two are in limbo. someone suggested to me that we should have an engagement party to break the ice and give way to more communication between the two since after all... our families WILL be joined when we get married.
now my question is, traditionally, who pays for the engagement party? (we might end up paying for it anyway but i just wanted to know how it's actually done)

i think you can TOTALLY still have an engagement party. i got engaged in may and had the party in october. i don't think there's a cut-off date, especially since you want your parents to mingle!!!! i don't think there's a tradition for who pays for it. my parents paid and my next door neighbor just had an engagement party where the groom's parents paid, and a friend of a friend just had one where the couple paid.

Dude. We had a lot of reasons for this, but we got engaged March 2008. We had our e-party Feb 2009, and our wedding June 2009. You can do whatever you want!!! Don't let people bring you down!! Everyone has their own reasons for doing things the way they do. Once people started being nosy and asking why we were doing it so late, and we told them, they felt really bad.

You can definitely have a party. I will be having my party at the end of this month, 8 months before the wedding. I think the general rule is no later than 6 months before the wedding, but nothing is set in stone.

Let's see we got engaged in September 2009 and our e-party is March 2010.
I didn't want it to be too after the fact but your situation is way different! I think you need to have a party for your families to kind of bond. You don't want there to be uncomfortable moments at your shower or wedding - so get them over with with at an e-party.
It doesnt even need to be formal - do appetizers and drinks. My FH's family is paying for ours - my family thinks they are kind of silly and I really didn't push for one - so i said 'if they want us to have one, they can pay for it.'
I really do think your families will benefit from it.

yeah there isn't really a time frame where you have to have one. It's definitely a good idea to get both your families to mingle and get to know one another before the wedding.

We got engaged Oct 10th 2009 and our e-party will be on Jan 23 2010...my parents are generously paying for it as their engagement gift to us.

I was worried about this but you guys are making me feel better! We got engaged Oct 2009 and our E party is Feb 2010. My parents are paying for this one and his parents are throwing us a separate party (probably more like a Couples Shower) in the summer because they live in Michigan.

I got engaged in October 2009 and our engagement party is March 2010. Our parents never met so we thought it would be good. They actually decided to meet in January with out us down in florida since they live there and my mom goes there all the time!!

I just had my e-party... 5mths later... WHOEVER CARES!! like the ladies above stated, Its PART_TAYYY TIMEEE Cleo!!!
We got engaged last Christmas & still didn't have an E-Party yet. Kind of because I felt weird to throw it for ourselves. FMIL says to me the day we got engaged 'Oh if we still lived there we'd have an E-Party for you..' it was like thaaaanks..like why even say that?? But as of late FH wants to throw on for ourselves..even though I am against it I do really want one..so what the heck! Have it whenever you want like alot of the girls said. Your Engagement lasts until the day you get married so who cares when the party is!!
