Question About Flying..PLEASE HELP!!

My permit expired about a year ago, and I knew this, just obviusly kept putting it off...and eventually forgot about it..

Well now I have a flight next friday, and an EXPIRED ID

I called the TSA, and of course can't get through to a real person, everything is automated...on their recording it says if you don't have a state issued ID you can bring your birth certificate and social security card, my brother works for the TSA though and says he's not allowed to let someone through without a photo ID..

I went to the DMV Tuesday to get a non-drivers but it could take 2 weeks to come in the mail, I am PRAYING it comes before I leave..but I'm really scared to fly without having it...I'm more scared of not being able to get BACK From Puerto Rico..

Has anyone had an experience with this? What should I do? I am freaking out a little!

do u have a passport? just go to dmv and get that paper thing they give you for your lic and show them at the airport...u can travel without id or expired but u get a really serious search

Unfortunatly, I don't have a passport FH and I both need to get one soon so we won't have a prob for our honeymoon...

I'm scared of the serious search!! From JFK I'm not so worried, but I don't want them taking me into a backroom or anything in Puerto Rico..I'm nervous!!

I think if you bring the expired one plus your birth certificate it should be ok... fingers crossed for you!!

I would bring your social and your expired drivers license. IDK if they even check the date on the license to be honest with you. I think they just check to see if the name on the ticket matches the name on the license.

Yea I'm going to bring my social, my birthcertificate, my expired ID and the card they gave me at the DMV the other day ... I'm hoping they don't look at the date..FH said they prob won't...but I'm still really nervous..

you dont have a passport you can use?

if not i would probably bring other forms of id with me such as social security card or original birth certificate just to be sure.

I just checked with continental airlines - the do not consider an expired id as valid.

check the website of the airline that you are traveling with.

I checked with American Airlines, it asks for a 'Valid State or Federal Issued ID'...I also gave them a call and they said it has nothing to do with them and to call the TSA..which is where I ended up with the automated line!

I'm not even sure what sort of security they have in Puerto Rico either , and what kind of ID they require..

i am pretty sure that they just want to make sure that the names match. i would bring the paper from the dmv that they give you to show that you did renew it along with the expired id. if anything you will go through extended security checkin.
i wouldnt worry about it that much...i am sure it will be fine.

FH and I went through a similar situation a few months ago (his name is a flagged name because of 9/11). We were going to Switzerland, and his tickets were paid for by the boxing promoter from there, and he wrote “Bobby” on his ticket instead of “Robert”. (Because of the lang. barrier he did not understand the difference) He had no ID what so ever that said Bobby, and we did have a problem in JFK. We brought every newspaper article about him there was with his name saying “Bobby” and they did not care at all. They almost did not let him get on the plane. It was a long process. We had to speak with the people at the airlines desk for a while. Eventually about 45 min later it was fixed. I do suggest that you get there earlier than usual, just incase. This way you have plenty of time to fix the problem if there is one.

Also, my public library has cards that are photo id. Maybe yours does too? I’m pretty sure at my library you get the card right away. It has your name and photo.

Yea you shouldnt have any problems if you bring your expired ID with the paper from the DMV.

I remember seriously being searched down in the airport in Puerto Rico. I didn't expect that at all, they even made me go into this closed machine where they spray mist/air on you to see if you have an powder substances on you! So make sure you call the airport in PR to double check what you need! Hope everything goes well!
