It may be your sensor. Have your mechanic check it. Thats all you need is to run out of gas , and get stuck.

And I also have to get my belt checked, for the power steering. It's rusted away.
Is that expensive to fix??

it depends. If its one belt maybe, but if there are many then i don't think so. What year and make car is it?
