I just received my juror summons....EEEEHHHH.....I'm a standby juror so i have to start calling in on the 9th. My question is...Is everyone a standby juror that has to call? How many days will I have to call in? Does it mean I may have a chance of not having to go?
I believe everyone is on 'stand-by' you may have to call for a few days...and yes there is a chance you may not have to go in at all...but I believe if that happens you can get a summons in another 2 years
not really sure...as it seems everyone I know has a different experience with it...(I have only been called once...and was put on a jury )

Re: Question about jury duty
Yes, it means you have a chance of not having to go. If you end up not being called, you are considered having served and will not receive another summons for another four years. Or, at least, you shouldn't.

Re: Question about jury duty
Dani, my dad just had to call in for 3 days (I believe), he was never called. Then his duty was done. :)
when you look into jury duty...it is one of the few chances you will have an impact on the govt...its your chance to interpret the laws...
why are you dreading it so much? the sitting around?

Re: Question about jury duty
I ca't sit for that long...I start to get very antsy...plus I hate the thought of having to be their late each day when I get out of work at 2:50 each day...plus I work after school hours for extra money...so if I have to serve I will lose the extra money.
most of the time the jurors don't stay until 5....they end early b/c judges have paperwork to finish up as well...
in my groups that was questioned there were 16...and only 3 were picked...so I hope that makes you feel better....people mentioned that their back hurt...and I remember a Physics teacher said that he held afterschool extra help sessions and he wasn't picked

Re: Question about jury duty
ohhh...thanks for the tips Yabbobay....i have to start getting my list of excuses ready. Did they ask they people if they had any probs or they just offered the info...like the guy with his back and the physics teacher?
It was a long time ago (well 1996...thats pretty long) and I think they did have a question - is there anything that would keep you from serving jury duty? but I imagine that is up to the lawyers...the questions that they choose for the voire dir (sp?)
is there a certain test that you ae preparing the students for?

Re: Question about jury duty
I was once on stand by and had to call for five days and didn't have to go in. That was a couple of years ago and I haven't received a notice since.
With the holidays coming up I would bet that case loads are lighter and they may not call you.
But if you do get called, from what I understand now, it's nearly impossible to get excused - esp if you work full time.
Good luck.

Re: Question about jury duty
The amount of time you have to stand by depends. It could be one day or a few days and then they will tell you you dont have to go at all or a time and place where to go. The last time I got a jury summons, I had to call for, I think two or three days and then they said on the phone I no longer had to call and I was done. I didnt even have to go.

Re: Question about jury duty
The first time I ever got called for jury duty for the call in, I did not have to go in. But then I did go the next time I was called.

Re: Question about jury duty
What I learned is that if they ask you if you think you will not be able to do this - get up and walk right out. They didn't question anyone who did that. They questioned me and 2 others because we waitied until the very end and said we couldn't do it - but then they let me go which I am happy because it would have been over 2 months they said and I was lost when they were describing the case to us!
