question about marriage licenses

We are getting married at the Fox Hollow but we both live in Maryland (I`m orginally from LI). Where should we get our license? I`ve been told so many different things. Thanks!

I live in Silver Spring, MD and I am getting married next week in Long Island. You have to apply for a New York Marriage License since that is the state you are getting married at. You have to go to one of the county clerk offices between the hours of 8:00 and 4:00 (some places vary). You have to have a money order only made payable to the City Clerk for $30 or $35 (I paid $30..but I hear it varies from different counties). You and your FI have to appear together with proof of identification (driver's license, passport, etc.) Hope this was helpful. Good Luck Star

Another critical detail....

You have to have the license for a FULL 24 Hours before the ceremony, so don`t leave it till the day before, just to be safe. Our priest told us of one incident where he had to make the couple wait because they had not gotten their license with enough lead time. The license is good for 60 days however, so it should be easy enough to get it some time in the 2 months preceeding the wedding date. Also, we paid cash ($25) at the Hempstead town clerk. I think it`s just in Manhattan that it`s Money Order only and it`s a bit more expensive too. On a side note, our priest also commented that he was glad we had not gotten ours in the city, because theirs was more of a pain for him to fill out. So it seems that it`s a bit easier all around if you go somewhere on Long Island.

You can go anywhere in NY State. In the 5 boroughs, it cost $30 and they accepted a money order only. On LI, I believe it is $25 and I was told (although not 100% sure...can anyone confirm this?) that you can pay cash. I was also told by my priest that the one on Plandome Road in Manhasset is the easiest and calmest location to go to. We went in Queens and it wasn`t difficult but it was kind of a zoo. Good luck, it`s kind of fun...we were very excited to go and get the license, I think we went 2 weeks before our wedding. Also, you can only go Monday - Friday.

We did pay cash at Town Hall in Babylon. No waiting, no line, very easy and we had the marriage certificate by the time we got home from the honeymoon.
