Question About Migraines

Question About Migraines

Does anybody get these only at certain times of the month?

I only get them with AF, and sometimes at ovulation. Sorry if that's TMI.

Anyway, I wonder if there's something that can prevent them? I'm so afraid to try that new medication (Zomig, Imitrex, etc.) because of the possible heart complications. But I'm sick of losing a day or two every single month to these headaches.

Yesterday and today were just the pitts.

I get major migraines but not at any specific time of the month. I feel your pain though. I get them so bad i'm bed all day sick to my stomach! I can't deal with them anymore. I have to go to the doctor.

Re: Question About Migraines

I suffer from debilitating migraines and have since I was 11 years old.
There is NOTHING to be scared of with taking Imitrex (my godsend and constant life saver) or Zomig or the like.....
The complications are extremely rare and usually your doctor can tell you if you are a candidate to take the meds or not.

I obviously would not reccomend them if you have a history of heart problems or high blood pressure. But if you don't have a history of these, why suffer?

I have often thought what I would do if Imitrex did not exist and I can not even Imagine.

I take both in the injection form and the pills. The injection works so quickly and is amazing, but not always convenient, so I use those in my worst case scenario. I use the pills when I first feel one coming on.

I have not found Zomig to be as effective as Imitrex though, but that's just me.

If you have any specific questions FM me!

Re: Question About Migraines

My Mom and Grandma have both suffered from these regularly for many, many years. I'm not sure if it's hormonal (therefore related to time of the month), or if it's their diets (heavy caffeine intake, but very little water) that causes them.

My Mom cannot take Imitrex b/c she has high blood pressure...but, one of my best friends swears by that stuff!

I have only had 1 or 2 migraines in my life (thank God), and I pray I do not take after my Mom/Grandma.

Karen - I hope you feel better fast!

Re: Question About Migraines

Thanks everyone.

Migraines run in my family. My mother, grandmother, brother, cousin, all get them. My sister only gets visual disturbances and not the pain.

I get both the visual disturbances and the pain, and nausea. Grrrrrr

I'm still afraid of that medication, though, but I guess I'm going to have to face my fear and try something eventually.
