I absolutely love the look of morning suits, but some tux places are telling me that it really isn't appropriate for FI and groomsmen to wear them because our wedding is at 3pm...that they really should wear tuxes.
I know traditionally morning suits were worn for the 'morning', but does this tradition still stand? Would it look inappropriate to be wearing them at night?

Re: Question about Morning Suits
My FH is wearing a morning suit & the GM are wearing wlking suits. It looks fine for any time of day/night, as long as it coordinates with your wedding. If everything else is very modern, for example, it will look a bit out of place.
besides, not too many people know what a morning suit is, they may just think it is a cutaway tuxedo
FM if you want to see pics of FH's Morning suit

Re: Question about Morning Suits
I love this one by Ralph Lauren...if FI does wear one, it'll probably be this...it's a cutaway jacket, but called a morning suit in the pic.
Difficult to see in this pic, but the pants are a grey/black striped like all morning suits. It's really a nice look.

Re: Question about Morning Suits
Actually, I shouldn't say ALL morning suits, I really don't know that...but like the others that I've seen.

Re: Question about Morning Suits
Kathi: Ive always thought the rule was the if a wedding ceremony starts BEFORE 6PM, the men are NOT SUPPOSED to wear the traditional tuxes. And that 'morning suits' are appropriate for any time before 6PM. (The concept being that 6PM starts the evening and formal wear should not be worn before evening time)
You may want to contact susans. Her groom and groomsmen ordered fabulous morning suits from England b/c they were not happy with the selection in the US. It looked really great.

Re: Question about Morning Suits
does it matter? if you love them, then have them! i don't believe in many of the 'wedding rules' anyway. do what makes you happy, its your day!
we saw very nice ones at mens wearhouse.

Re: Question about Morning Suits
Oh thanks Stef! Two tux stores told me that a wedding at 3pm should be considered evening...it didn't sound right to me.
I know we should do what we wanted, but I just wanted to be sure that I'm not in the dark about some 'wedding rule'.
Thanks!

Re: Question about Morning Suits
FH and dad went to victor talbots and were told morning suits before 3 and then tails around 5-6pm - but that it is a little loose - we are going with tails FH really wants them but we can't have our wedding at 6pm (church won't do service later than 5) so we pushed the wedding to 5 - we really didn't have a choice since it is a formal wedding and we CAN'T do it any later.

Re: Question about Morning Suits
Has anyone thought of having a morning suit for church and tails for your evening reception?

Re: Question about Morning Suits
that won't work for me because church is at 5 and reception is 630 or 7 - so we would go straight from one to the other

Re: Question about Morning Suits
It also depends on how trditional you want to go. In reality it is perfectly acceptable to have a formal wedding without tails at all. I think that tails do not look good on everyone & if your whole BP wears them, what makes the groom stand out? I am biased b/c FH is wearing the cutaway, even though our reception is from 4:30 - 10:30, but he looks AWFUL in tails, he is way to skinny in the waist. The GM are wearing walking suits, which is the same as a morning suit without the tails (or ascot.)
If you decide that is what you like, and if etiquette can take a back seat to what you like, then go for it!
ETA: I am not trying to offend anyone, of course, if etiquette is more important, then you decision will be different. all I am saying is that as far as wedding fashion is concerned, the rules are 'looser' than what they used to be.
