question about name change...

when do you technically change your last name? do you do it when you get your marriage certificate? and if so, what happens when you go on your HM if your passport has your old last name? also, how do you deposit checks that are written to Mr. and Mrs. ________ if you havent changed your last name. would you still be able to deposit the checks if you have a joint account? sorry for the ramble... one of my BMs was asking me all these questions last night and i was like 'duhhhhhh i dunno!!'

You don't get your official marriage certificate until 3 - 4 weeks after your wedding so you should still have your maiden name on all of your ID. When you go to change your name on things like your drivers license and SS card they ask to see your Marriage Certificate.

ETA: We opened a joint account right after the wedding and was able to deposit the 'Mr. and Mrs.' checks. The bank didn't ask for our marriage certificate, I guess a bunch of checks made out to Mr. and Mrs. xyz was sufficient enough.

Re: question about name change...

Below are printable applications for you to change your name:

Passport Application Social Security Card Application DMV Name Change Application

make sure you change your name on your social security card and dmv license first cuz for your passport name change you'll have to mail both passport and marriage certificate in. but you could order another marriage certificate from where you recieved your marriage license just in case you want to get things done right away (or god-forbid misplace your certificate).

i took my checks to the bank before i got the chance to legally change my name in my dmv license and etx. but i brought my marriage cert along with my driver's license and tehy okayed it.

it didn't take the dmv and social security office to return to me my new documents but it took the passport agency forever.. it was suppose to take 10 business days but i got it in maybe 2months.

i'm so long winded.. i'll stop.

when do you technically change your last name?
According to the law you can techincally change your name just by using a new name ... but I wouldn't so to answer your questions,

do you do it when you get your marriage certificate?
When you get your license from the city clerk, you can definitely start using your new name. I went to the bank and notified them of the upcoming wedding - they changed it and noted my maiden name so that whether the checks came in as Wife Maiden Name, Groom Last Name, Wife New Last Name, or Mr. & Mrs. New Last name, I was able to sign all the checks.
I also called all my credit cards and changed my name on them.
I also changed other bills/etc ...

and if so, what happens when you go on your HM if your passport has your old last name?
On your honeymoon, for legal situations (passport, INS, immigration) use your maiden last name on everything. At the resorts I signed my new name.

When you get home from your honeymoon and receive your marriage certificate go to SS first and get a new card. They say it takes two weeks but I got mine in 3 days - then you can go to DMV to change your license, registration & title.
There are also a few things that you need the certificate for (or a copy of it): Changing Benefits, changing your name on payroll, 401k, my car loan requires a copy of the certificate too - you'll have to call these places and see what they require.
Some just need a verbal request and some need a copy/fax of the certificate.

Good luck!

FH and I recently opened a joint account and the bank warned us that when we get married we wont be able to cash checks that are made out to Mr & Mrs until I receive my marriage cert. although they will accept the one the church sends you and that usually comes first. Just a heads up that not all banks will let you cash them right away!
