Hey ladies, I have 4 days left! OMG I can't believe it...the pressure is definitely on!!! I need help with a situation and don't know the solution. FH and I got our license last week, I did not put down 'new surname' because I didn't think that was needed then. Well my sister told me that changing my name w/ SSA will be difficult because my marriage certificate won't have the name. Is that true? How can I go about changing my last name? Please help I have Thursday to go get a new license if necessary!

Re: Question about name change....
I'm sorry I don't have an answer, but I would call Thursday and ask if you should get a new license
Good Luck!

Re: Question about name change....
I would call or go back to the town hall you got it at. You will need it to change your name as far as I know (I have been putting all of that off for over a month now!)

Re: Question about name change....
I got married by the justice of the peace in may I am having my wedding next april my reasons for it is because me and him are expecting our 2nd child and we just wanted to be married not engaged anymore lol anyways about the license. They should have asked you when you got your license if you plan on changing your name. I would go back and get that fixed ASAP.

Re: Question about name change....
I beleive that the Marriage Certificate IS HOW you change your name...i have mine here & since i am keeping my name, no new name appears for me..an di have a box checked saying 'check box if same as premarriage surname' here is what i found on the SSA website...
Documents for a name change: If you need to change your name on your Social Security card, you must show us a recently issued document as proof of your legal name change. Documents Social Security may accept to prove a legal name change include:
Marriage document; Divorce decree; Certificate of Naturalization showing a new name; or Court order for a name change. If the document you provide as evidence of a legal name change does not give us enough information to identify you in our records or if you legally changed your name more than two years ago, you must provide Social Security with additional documentation.
Here's something from NYS's marriage license site..
-One or both parties to a marriage may elect to change the surname by which he or she wishes to be known after the marriage by entering the new name in the appropriate space provided on the marriage license. The new name must consist of one of the following options:
the surname of the other spouse; any former surname of either spouse; a name combining into a single surname all or a segment of the premarriage surname or any former surname of each spouse; a combination name separated by a hyphen, provided that each part of such combination surname is the premarriage surname, or any former surname, of each of the spouses.
