How long after the wedding do I have to change my name? I know I have to go to the social security office but it's only open from 9am-4pm mon-fri and I work mon-fri so i'm not sure when I'll be able to go. Also, what do I need to bring with me? We got our marriage certificate in the mail. So I have that already. Please help! Thanks!

Re: Question about name change
DH and I went to the SS office and DMV the Monday after we got back from our HM.
At the SS office you need your marriage certificate and I think ID.... I brought my passport too- but I guess they didnt need anymore forms of identification. (She asked me if I had my SS on me...... which I didnt, and she said just destroy it when I got home- soooo def. bring your old SS card with you just in case... I wanted to keep it just in case further down the road if I need proof of my maiden name0.
At the DMV I also showed our marriage license and ID and they made me take a new picture...ughhhh I was soooo mad!!! I took a pic like a year ago and I actually liked it! When I went, I looked like c rap so I wasnt a happy camper lol

Re: Question about name change
i don't think there is a time limit....no 100% sure though...were you thinking weeks or months?
edited to add: If you own your car, you need to bring your title($10)..you'll need to obviously change your last name with the DMV as well as get a new registration, which they print out right then and there

Re: Question about name change
You can change whenever you want or not at all. If you plan on using DH's health benefits that you should.
SS office -- bring marriage license and some form of ID
DMV -- Marriage license and old license. If you want to keep your old license then you need other proof such as a passport and utility bill
You do not have to change your registration or title if you don't want to. I don't have a title but I do have a registration and I wasn't going to spend more money changing all this stuff.
You can use any name you want as long as you're not defrauding anyone.
I changed my name at the bank but they said they do not need to issue me new debit cards since I just got new ones. You can have things in both name because it is legally you.

Re: Question about name change
Just did it all yesterday. I went to the SS office in Mineola and I was in and out in 10 minutes. Went to the DMV and was in and out of there in 20. Bring marriage license, passport, old license and registration. If you own the car bring the title, if it is a lease you do not need it because the banks name is on it. I was not asked for my old SS card, but based on the fact that everyone gets asked for different stuff bring it anyway. You will also have a new pic taken at the DMV so keep it in mind (mine should be glorious without makeup and bed head). Good luck!

Re: Question about name change
Thanks so much!! I didn't even think about the DMV ugh! Do I have to do the DMV thing at the same time as Social Security?

Re: Question about name change
I don't think there is a time limit at all....you don't need to change everything at once, but I feel like at some point you may be asked for ID for something and if your license says one name and your SS card says another (or passport, etc), you may have a problem.
