Question about NYC salaries/taxes

Question about NYC salaries/taxes

I have a general question about NYC salaries having never worked in NYC.

I think I heard somewhere along the way that if you work in NYC, you have to pay more taxes or something... Can anyone elaborate?

Is this just if you work in Mahattan? Or is it any of the boroughs?

Also is it if you live and work in NYC? How about if you work in NYC and live in Long Island?

Anyone know?

Re: Question about NYC salaries/taxes

my friend lives in nassau and works for the city, and she has to pay them an extra 'tax'. nto sure if that is across the board w/ all jobs, or just city jobs, or just Her specific job though

I was pretty sure they did away with this. This used to be the case (NYC commuter tax), and a pretty hefty tax at that, but I'm pretty sure it was declared unconstitutional.

Living in the city is another story - we pay loads!

There used to be a Non Resident tax for those who lived outside the 5 boroughs but worked there. You would be able to get in back in your taxes.

NYC including the boroughs, does have a tax that the rest of the state doesn't.

Re: Question about NYC salaries/taxes

So 2 scenarios....

1. If a person working in Manhattan, moved from Queens to Nassau.... this person's paycheck should go up? Right?

2. If 2 people worked had the same salary (tax bracket, deductions) and one lived in Nassau and the other in Queens... the person in Nassau would take home more money?

I am pretty sure the answer is yes. I moved to Queens after getting married at the end of last year, and I work in Nassau. This year I have to pay NYC tax on my Nassau salary

Well I'm happy to hear that. I work in the city and live in Queens right now, but I'll be moving to Suffolk in a couple of months, but still working in the city.

I used to live in Queens and also worked in NYC and I now take home an extra $300 a month. There is no more commuter tax.

There is no tax right now on commuters - unless you work for the city itself and live outside the boroughs - then it is an equal tax as if you are a resident. I do not believe this tax is applied to those working for the board of ed though.

Really? That's pretty good. I hope when I move, I make extra money like that myself. But then again, I will have monthly LIRR cost come out of my-pre tax...

I didn't know that- I'm surprised that the other city unions allow that to happen (I work for the Board)

Unless you are an actual employee of the city...ex) NYPD, Sanitation, Teacher ...you do not have to pay City Tax unless you live withing the 5 bouroughs.

Although some employers because they are located in the city still follow the old rule of resident and non resident tax....which was done away with in 2000...only residents of the city are required to pay taxes to the city...unless you are a city employee...then you still pay taxes to the city

If the co that you are working for charges you taxes for City and you live on LI then you should be able to get the full amount paid towards city tax back...when you file your return

Its not something I'm positive about - I just remember when I used to work for an accountant's office the teachers didn't have to file the 1127 form like the cops, firemen, etc. It may have changed. Something to check into though.
