Was it really stressful? FH and I are thinking about it, but I am not sure if I can deal with the extra stress of purchasing a home while I am planning my wedding. I have always said that I would love to buy a house where I can have it gutted out and renovated to my liking... this is a lot of work!!
Originally, we were just going to rent for a year or two.. or until we found what we were looking for.
If you didn't purchase a home before you got married, how soon after did you? Did you rent an apt. before you bought your home?
TIA Rosanne

Re: Question about purchasing a home (timing)
Personally with all the things that went wrong before my wedding there was no way I would have been able to do both. We were already living together prior to the wedding so we stayed there until May, now we are with my Mom until we close on the house which should be around the 17th. I think we will be here for about 2 weeks after that while we paint and do the floors, then we will move in!!
Only you could make that decision. Looking for a house was not stressful, it was more depressing. If you can handle it go for it, or you can relax enjoyed being newlymarried and wedding planning and rent an apartment.

Re: Question about purchasing a home (timing)
I have to be honest and agree with Jamie...buying and looking for a house right now is ten times more stressful then my wedding was!!!!!! There would be no way I could devote the time to house hunting and wedding stuff in the same two day weekend. IMO save your money enjoy being married and house hunt when you're ready! We've been married almost a year and just started looking two months ago.

Thanks.. What's hard is that we are getting so much pressure from family/friends- Seems like they are so against paying rent- which I am too.. but we have to start out somewhere. We don't plan on renting forever.

Re: Question about purchasing a home (timing)
I don't know--we bought a place before our wedding, and I am glad we did. If we rented for a year it would have been money poured into rent--now it can go into this investment, and we can get tax $ back from it. It was stressful--more so than the wedding planning--but I would not be able to stand living with either of our families or a basement apt, which are the only options where we would have saved enough $ to make renting worthwhile. If you have the $ to put down I would look now while interest rates are still low. I think they will only go up, and house prices are not looking like they will go down or even level off anytime soon either...

Re: Question about purchasing a home (timing)
We are buying, closing in a week. And the stress has been high! My FH calls it a suicide mission! We got engaged in July planned our wedding for 3 months, then stopped that to look for a house for about 4 months, then had to go back to wedding/HM planning while dealing with inspections, mortgages, appraisals, and now figuring out the move and the cleaning, etc!
Its alot! I dont know that I would do it this way if I had the choice again! IF I were to buy before the wedding, I would have planned is that the closing was 6 months before this way it would be less stressful because everything wouldnt have been so close!
Its alot of stress and work, and arguing about what you want vs what your FH wants! If you do it, it can work but you have to be patient and keep your head up! There can be alot of ups and downs in the buying process even after the contracts are signed!!!
GOOD LUCK!
