My FH and I found a beautiful apartment here in Queens. It's 2 bed, 2 bath, EIK and large living room for 1300 / month. This place is in the first floor of a three-family house.
We fell in love with the place and had the lease in our hands until I heard the neighbor's dog next door howling tonight. Another turnoff is that the landlords live upstairs and have a 3 yr. old baby boy that runs around the house all the time. Turn off #3 is that the landlord's family doesn't speak english. Only chinese.
My FH loved the place and already paid commission to the broker for this place; but after tonight with all the noise and confusion, I just couldn't go through with it. So after fighting with my FH, we decided not to take the place.
Did I do the right thing? This place is gorgeous... it's in a brand new building. But I just couldn't deal with all of that stuff.
What do you think?

Re: Question about renting an apartment...
i think that the only real problem would be a dog... but i have to admit, my dogs bark when someone is by our door. is that when he was barking? or just the whole night? as for the chinese i dont think thats too bad. i would prefer! then they wont bother you too much!!! as for the baby.. i think a 3 yr old is better than a 16 yr old that would play loud music. .....i'm just trying to play devils advocate here though. (we're trying to find a place too so i know what youre going through)

Re: Question about renting an apartment...
If we knew we could tell the landlords 'keep it down, the kid is running and yelling, etc', then there would be no problem. But we can't communicate with them. So I anticipate that's a problem.
Maybe the dog was cold or something and that's why he/she was barking. But imagine it barking all night, right next to our bedroom?
I may be paranoid, but what good is having a beautiful apartment if you can't even be at peace there?
So we decided not to go with it. FH was disappointed, but I just didn't feel sure.
Was I right?

Re: Question about renting an apartment...
hey, if youre ALREADY thinking about those things imagine what it would be like dealing with them AFTER you sign the lease and have to deal with it for a whole year!!!
i think you were right.
we are picky too. i have to look now too. we got a new lease in the mail and we have to sign it before April 1st if we want to stay. We LOVE where we live. Its close to EVERYTHING. (Even my job is on this block!!!!) But we want a bigger place if we can. Thats not the problem though. Here are my problems... maybe they will help you while you look for places too: -DON'T move in near a bar/club/lounge. We didnt even THINK about what was to come with that! -Don't move into a building where your neighbor is a cranky old man. They are lonely, crabby, and nosey!!!!!!
Good luck! Where are you looking? Brokers? Craigslist?
Hang In There!

I think you did the right thing. It's a tough situation, and even if you could ask the landlords to keep their kid from running around, what could they really do? He's 3 and a little kid. They will find someone who isn't bothered by that.

Re: Question about renting an apartment...
WAIT!! Did both the renter and you sign the lease??? If not, the realtor cannot accept the commission (Even if you signed it).

I think you did the right thing and you should get your money back. If you didn't sign the lease they are not entitled to your money.

You did the right thing. When I moved into my first apt. in a beautiful complex, if I wouldve known the nieghbor downstairs Always blasted her radio, had company, etc. I wouldnt have signed! Im in a private apt. now, (uncles house) and love it. Not to mention we are saving a lot of $$ on rent. We are finally getting ready to move into our own house. I cant wait!

Re: Question about renting an apartment...
We signed the lease, but it doesn't start until march 15. So we stoped the security deposit check and called the realtor to tell him that the lease was off.
I think we're allowed to back off from the deal because the lease doesn't start until tuesday. So I'm not worried about that. What worries me is the $1300 we gave the realtor IN CASH for commission.
We're going to see him today. Hopefully he'll give the commission back (or at least part of it). If he doesn't give the commission back, I'll ask him to find us another place around the same neighborhood.
Do you think he'll go for it?

You should deal with the realty company instead of the actual realtor. They should give the commission back.

Re: Question about renting an apartment...
You definitely did the right things. We had the upstairs neighbors from HELL move in when we lived in our old apartment and it was torture. Between the constant running, the music blasting, the rollerskating, the constant vistors in and out, the dog, having no carpeting on the floor! We could not take it!

Re: Question about renting an apartment...
We went to see the realtor this afternoon. At first, he said, 'oh, you backed out of a done deal, I can't give you back the commission'. But then I told him 'the lease starts on monday, so we're still on time. I want at least some of the commission back.'
So after all of the bargaining, he agreed to give us half of our commission, and he promised to try to get us another place. If we find another place, then instead of giving him full commission, he'll ask for half.
So I'm so relieved that I got out of that deal. I know we'll find a better place before we get married.
Thank you ladies for supporting me. I was truly worried about the whole situation, but thank God everything turned out better than I expected.
