Question about Wedding Programs. What are they?

Hey all

Somewhat silly question but I honestly don't know the answer. What is the point of wedding programs? They seem to be the run-down of the wedding and reception, but are they handed out the day of the wedding? that seems a little self-defeating if they are. Also, do you really need them if you are not getting married in a church? We are getting married at THE BROWNSTONE in NJ. We are having the ceremony and reception at the same place outside; the first outside, the second inside in the grand conservatory. Since both events are at the same place, immediately following one another, are programs necessary?

Thanks in advance.

Programs usually list the order of the ceremony . Most programs acknowledege the readers, parents, members of the BP, readings and musical selections. HTH

They arent necessary but alot of people use them to introduce who everyone is and to give thanks to people. It is a special touch that people like to add but in way necessary. Actually, if you read, alot of people aren't going them.

I was thinking of just making simple one's myself or do my own little 'newsletter' kind of thing... The BP gets introduced at the reception anyway, I wanted it more to thank those that are important to us that are not in the BP.
