I have been thinking about switching careers and am looking into the possibility of becoming teacher.
Do any of you have any suggestions on how to start the process? I have some done some general research and think I have an idea of what I have to do... but curious what input you all have?
Thanks!

Re: Question for all the Teachers
Look up Teaching Fellows. They pay for you to go to school for your masters while you teach.

Its true. It used to be that Math and English/Language Arts teachers were in high demand but lately I'm not seeing that anymore. I'd say Special Ed would probably be the field of teaching that jobs are still widely available in.

ESL too
holy moly, we're always adding sections of ESL in my district. foreign language is the other one; even the $hittiest spanish teacher can get a job.

I agree, we hired 5 Special Ed teachers in the last year. They are in demand. If you are doing middle upper elementary Science is a biggie too. I know that when my AP was looking through resumes last year she was looking for strong Literacy background.

Re: Question for all the Teachers
I would say that before you do anything you should get into a classroom to observe. Visit a friend that is a teacher or an old teacher of yours. Until you live it- you have NO idea what it is really all about.

Re: Question for all the Teachers
I think it's a good idea to get into the classroom first. I have 5 degrees (Special Ed, and Literacy included) and I can't get a contract position. It is very hard right now to get a job especially in elementary ed. Just know that going into it won't be easy when looking for a job. Though I do love teaching and can't wait to do more that just a leave replacement. It you need anything- maybe i can help. So good luck. ~~Rach
