We're meeting with our priest next week to review the different components of the ceremony. I know there will be readings and I've all ready asked a few readers to be a part of the ceremony. A Catholic friend told me that all of the readers have to be Catholic. I know the people carrying the sacrement have to be Catholic but I thought the readers just had to be literate. If this is true I'm in trouble because 2 of the readers are Jewish and 1 is agnostic. Does anyone know if this is true? Do the readers have to be Catholic?

Re: Question for Catholic Brides
I would talk to your priest about it, but I don't think so for us (one of mine isn't catholic), but maybe its church dependant.

Re: Question for Catholic Brides
no, they don't have to be catholic. but i really think it's up to the church. if you have an old fashioned church/priest, they might give you a hard time. so ask them just in case.

Re: Question for Catholic Brides
I'm not sure here, to be honest. i don't think they ask honestly. but you might not want to give your jewish friend a reading from the new testament, if they might be uncomfortable. or if it is a problem, you could have a jewish friend do the old testament reading, find a Catholic or other Christian to do the New Testmanent reading and have your other 2 readers do the Prayers of the Faithful. as regards to communion, if you are having a Mass, your readers should not be receiving communion.

Re: Question for Catholic Brides
I had a similar issue My FH wanted his Best Friend to be Best man he is Jewish We though they were going to give us a Problem.. Luckily they didn't... Best man doesn't have to be Catholic but to baptize our child when the time comes he couldn't be God Father which is understandable.
But I would think to be a reader it wouldn't be an issue. I would check with your Priest..

Re: Question for Catholic Brides
both of my readers were Jewish - the church never asked and I didn't bring it up to them - i didn't think it was an issue. i did of course make sure my the readers were comfortable doing it, and they were.

Re: Question for Catholic Brides
I was told that they didn't have to be Catholic as long as they were respectful and considerate of the readings. I would ask the priest when you see him to double check.

WOW That's a good question. I am not sure. I will have to ask about that as well.

Re: Question for Catholic Brides
I think I'm going to stick with the don't-ask-don't-tell policy, and for insurance I'm brining a chocolate cake. Thank you all for your advice!
