Our computer crashed yesterday and I think we've lost everything on it. WE contacted Dell who told us they will send us Windows XP disc to reinstall everything, because now all we get is a blue screen that says physical dump of memory complete.
I'm mostly upset about all the pictures that we had on there.... message to Digital camera users - make sure you either print all the pictures out or save them to a CD... I think we've lost pictures from my bday, my grandmothers bday, our anniversary etc... I am so upset about that.
Just wondering if this happened to anyone else.... is thereany way of retrieving the info thats on there. My brother says if we reinstall Windows XP we are going to wipe out the old one.... but Dell won't send a techinician until we try this...

Re: Question for computer knowledgeable people
I am sooo sorry this happened to you. I can imagine what you feel. Thank God I learned from previous experiences so I save all pictures and files are disk. Hopefully your computer gets fixed and maybe with some hope your files haven't been deleted.

Re: Question for computer knowledgeable people
Oh no Denise!
Do you have an ms dos disc?
Anthony said theres a way to check...hes into this stuff...
the only way to lose your files is if the harddrive is broken...there are a few options:
when you get the disc from dell - DO NOT make the same user nam if you have anything on your desktop...it will erase ONLY what is on your desktop (if you file things in the proper place you will be fine)
if it is your harddrive...you will probably still not be able to boot up...but if you are...SAVE everything that is important as soon as you can as it could crash again...
you could bring the harddrive to a specialty place...but its mostly companies that do that and it is VERY expensive...
there are a few programs out there (affordable) that do try to save info
can you describe a few more problems...and I can have DH give you more info

Re: Question for computer knowledgeable people
How much memory does your PC have? Windows XP by itself uses 128mb of memory so if you only have around 256mb then that might be the reason. Don't trust me on this though ...cause sometimes this is due to hardware or even software conflicts.
Please type the entire error message that you are receiving .... this will be helpful in diagnosing and resolving the problem.

Re: Question for computer knowledgeable people
DH (my computer geek) says just about the same thing as endlesslove. He says to try to hook up another hard drive to your computer and reboot using that drive. Then you can view/save the files on your hard drive that has been corrupted. After that you can reformat your drive. Good Luck! This isn't easy.

Re: Question for computer knowledgeable people
Thanks for all your information and help. I am going to print this all out and show it to DH... when we spoke to Dell they said that as long as we reinstall in the safe mode, our stuff should be okay, and that they would walk us through the reinstallation... Thanks for all your help!
I'm so glad my parents live close so I can pop over and use their computer... I didn't realize how attached to it I am
