Question for cruise-goers

Question for cruise-goers

I have never been on one, and I am seriously considering going on a one-night cruise to nowhere out of NY for my b-party.

I have gone fishing a ton out of freeport, and when they go into the ocean, I often get sick. Will I be sick for my whole b-party????

I have heard that the cruise ships are SO BIG and move slowly so that you don't really feel like you are on the water. This ship also isn't going anywhere really - I don't know where it sails but I imagine it's very slow since there is no 'destination.' It has to go into international waters though because there is a casino on board.

Anyone been on the gambling boats out of Freeport? I imagine it's similar. Anyone been on the cruise to nowhere and often gets seasick???

PLEASE someone tell me I will be ok! I was sooooo excited about this and then my mom brought this up - I really thought you don't get sick on cruises and hadn't even thought of it.

TIA!

My Aunt gets horrible motion sickness & cruises all the time- she only has gotten sick one time & that was a trans-atlantic crossing- I think you will be fine for one night- get a high up cabin and you wont even feel it!

I've never been on a cruise but am going on one for part of our HM. My mom has gone on a few and the only time she got sick was when she went on a cruise to Hawaii that left out of LA. Supposedly those waters are a lot harsher. As long as you are going on one of the major cruise lines with the big ships, I think you should be fine. That would be a great Bparty. I've thought of that as well!

FH and I went on a cruise to the Bahamas and I was concerned about getting sick too - we took Dramamine before we even boarded and boy, that was a BAD IDEA! We were pooped for the next 2 days - tired and sleepy - even though it was non-drowsy! So ... don't take it to 'prevent' getting sick

For a short trip, u may not really even feel it unless the weather is very bad.

Goodluck!

I cannot take dramamine anyhow, it has atropine in it and I am allergic. (Or was as a baby, not sure if I still am, but I am NOT risking it.) Same for the patch. I can take bonine, which is an over the counter thing... helped when I went bluefishing once. I just hope it's enough!

I have gone on about 5 cruises. The first time I got soooo sick I went into the infirmery. -pretty bad-
The second time i tried the over the counter stuff to put behind the ear....didn't work. again got sooooo sick.
After that I went to my doctor and she gave me some medicine and OMG the greatest thing ever!!
I don't have any side effects from it. Unfortunately i do not remember the name of it but i'm sure if you ask your doctor they'll know what to give you.

(I go fishing all the time too out by greenport and I never get sick. Thats why I thought being on a cruise would be easy...big mistake!!)

Ohhhhh no. I have a feeling anything the dr gives me is going to have the medicine I'm allergic to in it, but I guess I can ask.

Jenn, most people don't feel it even moving.

The only time it bothered me was when I woke up in the morning and felt my bed moving haha.

You'd probably be fine

Do you normally get sick though on boats? I hope that because it's a big boat, I won't feel it.

Add this to the list of questions I have for your parents! (I should get them a gift for all the things they are going to be answering for me )

I did just find an article about the things you can take to prevent it - and I hope that if I take the Bonine correctly (before boarding), take tons of ginger tablets leading up to the event and during, and get a sea-band, I might be ok. I will be will prepared! I think I am doing it anyhow!

before my first cruise i was so worried bc i get sea sick so easily. I bought the wrist bands you wear for motion sickness and put them on even before i got on the ship and seriously had no problem the whole week we were on the cruise. Those wrist bands are the best

I think if you take the bonine you should be fine. You don't feel anything unless there are high seas and that's only if you're sitting still, like in a theater watching a show. It's really not noticeable.

Jenn, spoke to Mom -

Dad gets sick and he didn't feel it at all

Mixed Drinks were around $7 - but my mom drinks long island iced teas, so who knows what she was ordering. . . .she wasn't sure about wine, and a bucket of 5 beers was $20

She paid $15 or $20 to upgrade her dinner to the hibachi restaurant (doesn't remember exactly how much)

I'm going to see her tomorrow night, I'll see what else I can get out of her

I use them everytime I fly. I dont go on boats b/c of motion sickness, sorry cant tell you if they will work, i dont chance it lol.

Bonine should help and its non drowsy. Also take ginger tablets, that is supposed to help too.

Re: Question for cruise-goers

All of the major cruise ships actually have stabilizers in them to stop the boat from rocking. It really takes a serious storm for you to even feel like you are on a boat. That is where the smaller fishing boats and gambling boats go wrong.

I do get motion sick and have never gotten sick on a cruise, even without taking anything.
