Question for Homeowners Regarding Changing Locks

Hello all!

I know this is very bad -- I've lived in my condo for almost three years and we never changed the locks! tsk, tsk. With the baby coming in March, I'm trying to get all those chores I've been putting off completed! However, I am clueless...

So here is the question... Who do I hire to change my locks, and what do I have to do to be safe? It seems odd to have a stranger come to your house and know exactly what your locks are.

The current locks are the brand 'Best' which are supposedly easier to change, but most often used for rentals. Should I switch to something else?

Thanks in advance for your guidance. Note: Neither my husband or I is handy at all.

Re: Question for Homeowners Regarding Changing Locks

My last apt was broken into & the managment company had a locksmith replace the locks & we could pay to upgrade, which we did, and they instlaled a Medeco lock which is what we have a at work. It is the kind where the key says'do not duplicate' and you have to get copies from the locksmith.

I have nevber heard of a locksmith employee breaking into to a home--i guess it would be easy to figure it out if there wer a string of crimes& they were all clients of that business.
I guess you just have to trust them. Ask a neighbor maybe?

I live in Massachusetts, hehe. Wedding was on Long Island though, so I still stick around here.

You could call a locksmith, or if you are handy with a screwdriver you can do it yourself. Not sure if you can get medeco at your local home depot or lowes but Schlaage is also very good and you can get it there.

I've swapped out a lock or two, myself - not much to it.

we changed a a few too- ok, actually it was the same lock, a few times. I can't think of the brand-they had it a them at Home Depot- first we didn't have the key for when we moved in ( top lock) so we tried to change the core & broke something, then changed the whole thing, a year or two later it broke, then we repalced it again, and a few years later it was broken into.
So, I dont' reccomend that kind-- wish I could remeber the name. It was't Schlaage.

I think Medeco has to be through a lock smith.
