my FH & I did not have an engagement party. This July we're hosting an event where we invite those who we're asking to be a part of the wedding in a special way formally. Kinda like a small celebration get together.

We were debating on where we wanted to have it & the style of the event. We decided that we're going to have it in my FIL's yard (tented), that way Petey can be there .

Can we write: Invite you to be our guest

If the soiree is at FIL'S home

I think so but it really depends on who is 'hosting'

I agree - you definitely have to mention the person/people that are hosting if it's someone other than you and your FH

I agree. I think you have to mention the people who are hosting the party. You can invite them but just mention who is hosting it.
