How often do you find your center stones getting loose? Mine has 4 prongs and it seems to be getting loose every 6 months & it scares me. Is that normal? How often do you need your stone tightened?

Re: question for ladies w/center stones over 3ct.?
Mine is not over 3ct but you should probably have them add two more prongs. I have 6 prongs and it has not gotten loose yet and we have been engaged about 8 months and I wear it all the time to sleep shower whatever.

Mine is 2.5 and I have a 6-prong setting. It has only gotten loose once and I had it tightened immediately. I wear it all the time, in the shower, to bed, to the gym, in the pool, etc.

Mine is 2.5 and I have 5 prongs on it (its a Pear)
That is NOT normal and it shoudl NOT get loose every 6 months. You either need more prongs or a jeweler who knows what they are doing.

The ct size has nothing to do with the prongs. Your prongs should never get lose. If they do, the metal on your setting is too soft. Opt for a harder metal.
And a 6-prong setting is much more secure than a 4-prong.

FH knew I didn't want a 6 prong, but he got it anyway and I am so glad he did. When we were at the jeweler where he got my E-ring from and we were looking at bands, I asked him if he could change my 6 prong to a 4.....he told me he could do anything I wanted but he told me I would be back in no time because of the fear that one is getting loose or the diamond would fall out...
I love the 4 prong look but when I realized how much more secure and safe my stone is with 6, I realized why FH got the 6....I would ask your jeweler about making a 6 prong so you don't have the constant fear of loosing it!
He also said 6 prong prevents any damage to the stone itself incase you ever hit or bump into anything with it....
Good luck!

like another posted said the size of the stone has nothing to do with the prongs become loose. if you are having this issue regularly you should either, get another 2 prongs to make it a 6 prong setting or get a strong metal.

I mention the size b/c I was told by several jewelers that the larger the stone the more hits it's going to take (just like the larger anything is the more it's going to be in the way). Also, it's important to mention that it's a round stone and set up high. Different shaped stones, like a pear, have that extra prong on the tip that add to stability that it's really not comparable. I didn't pick 6 prongs b/c I didn't like the look either. I felt like it just covered up too much of the stone, but now I'm wondering if I should have the setting redone w/6 prongs and just deal with it. As for the jeweler, what concerns me is that this is a well known high-end jewelry store on 5th Ave. in Manhattan so it's not like they don't have knowledgable jewelers. They work with several high end designers that you've heard of a bunch of times and that's who designed the setting. So now I'm just wondering if I should force them to have the setting completely redone (with 4 prongs again)? Or have them remake a new one with 6 prongs? Or just have it retightened every 6 months?

Mine is over 3ct. I have 6 prongs & the stone is never loose. I also ride a motorcycle, you would think the vibration from the bike would shake it loose......no way.You need 6 prongs. Don't chance loosing the rock of your life. It's very inexpensive to add 2 prongs.

Really? Hmmmmm...good to know. Question, do you find the 6 prongs gets in the way of the look of the stone? Or you don't really notice it?
