Question for married girls or girls that work for a bank???????????

Original post by wifetobe

I was told yesterday to not deposit ALL the money in the bank at once. (gifts for the wedding) Because they say after a certain amount you have to fill out an IRS form and you will get taxed on the money?????

Is this true!! What did you ladies do???

If its made out to Mr. & Mrs. DH Last name, you both have to sign it. Thats what our bank had us do.
We also changed my account into a joint account at the same time as making all the deposits.

Also just wanted to let you know, almost all our checks were made out to Mr & Mrs DH's last name and we didn't have to both sign them, just one or the other...

I guess it depends on your bank?

I guess so b/c they made both of us sit there and sign all of them!

Maybe call your bank and find out before you do anything.

ETA: My bank is Capital One.

Colleen I already got a check written out to mrs and mrs booth ... i was told we cannot deposit it until we have a joint account.

for the original question - i asked at my bank about this because there, anything over $5k will be placed on an 'extended hold.' I was told it's not just ONE check in the amount of $5K - it's all checks COMBINED. So, I guess I will making a few deposits of under $5K.

Not sure how this relates to the $10K thing, if at all.

We just had a check written out to Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth C. Is that the way your check is written? I was going to try to deposit it today. FH signed it because his full name is on it.

Yes, that's what mine says. I was told it cannot be deposited unless both people sign, and if you have a joint account. But that's from my mom - not a bank.

We have a joint account and never have had to double sign. Guess I'll find out when I go!

we were able to deposit all cash and checks into our account with no problems, and it was over 10k, so I'm not sure. We also had the checks written so many ways, but we did have a joint checking, it did have my maiden name, but they didn't mind.

you should only have to double sign if thats how your account is setup. I had to do that when I was little and was on my parents account.

My bank didn't say anything. They actually said not to put it into a savings account since there is little to no interest so to put it into a money market to gain more interest. I hope I don't have to pay tax on the money. This must be new b/c no one has ever said anything!

We were able to deposit all of our gifts on the same day cash and checks, and we didn't have to fill out any additional paper work explaining where the money was coming from.

I deposited in excess of $10k and my bank did not give me anything to fill out.

Yea, I used to work at a bank....if you deposit more that 10,000 in cash at the bank all at once they report you.

This applies to cash only.

Even if you deposit it a little at a time during the same week they still report you. I have no clue what I am going to do...

yeah we didnt have to both sign it either. We had alot of checks with both our names and dh deposited into his account. Let me tell you that sometimes the workers there dont know what they're talking about and they just make up stuff thinking its the right answer, instead of actually asking. I would go back and ask.
Last week i went to the bank to cash a check and the girl said she couldnt. IT was from when i covered for my friend at work. The check had the company name on it so obviously not a personal check. She said it has to be a payroll check and needed to see the stub(uhmmm ive done this before and they never had to see it) but i had it so i showed it to her. IT showed my name, what days i worked, but she said 'where are the taxes and health benefits that were taken out' i told her i was just covering and the lady made the check out for the amount she wanted to pay me. She said no we cant do that then, its considered a personal check then i told her i had cashed it the week before and she said they shouldn't have . I drove 5 mins to another commerce, and the kid was new and said he didnt know so he went and asked the manager, and yeah they were able to cash it, he said they just had to check the person's bank account first and thats it. I should've gone back to the bank and told that B itch she was wrong. I hate when they just talk like they know the answer, instead of asking a manager or somebody.

I work in a bank and the only time anything gets reported is if you deposit more than 10K in CASH!!! Checks do not count....The bank will not ask where you got this money from....The form that gets filled out is called a Currency Transaction Report....You don't have to sign anything....
If you have any questions, feel free to FM me....
Hope this helps...

We deposited it all at once. For the ones that were written out to Mr & Mrs, we both signed them just incase, but we didn't have to deposit them in a joint account...just put them all in DH's since we still haven't set up our joint one...oops
