from reading jenny's post, it looks like there are a lot of teachers on here who are already mommies. i am going to school for my Masters in Education - i should be student teaching by next spring and working full-time next fall.
question - if you don't have tenure, how does the school handle maternity leave?
i really don't want to wait until i have tenure for us to start a family due to my age.
thanks!!!!

Re: Question for Moms who are teachers
That's tricky. In the district I work for, a lot of teachers wait until they have tenure. Although some haven't. The ones that didn't wait for tenure had their babies in May, June or July and came back to work in September. I knew one woman who gave birth in the middle of August and came back in September. I tried to arrange my pregnancy so I could have my baby in April and come back in September. As you'll see when you're TTC it doesn't always work out the way you want. I wouldn't recommend getting pregnant your first year. That is a very stressful year. I think even if you take a leave in the middle of the year and come back to finish the year, that would be fine. Good luck. Have fun student teaching. Were are you going for your masters?

Re: Question for Moms who are teachers
Hi Deb!
i'm going to Dowling for my masters. ideally, i would love to get pregnant early into my second year of teaching - and deliver some time in late-june, early-july. since i am going to be teaching HS math, there is a good chance my students will be taking a regents exam. i would hate to go out before they take the exam. i'm just also afraid, in order to deliver, let's say July 1, i would have to get pregnant by october 1. how would i handle M/S being in a classroom????
i have sooo many questions!!!

a school district cant deny you tenure due to a maternity leave, if they do, then you can SUE them.

Re: Question for Moms who are teachers
Well, I guess with the m/s I was lucky because I got it at night. I also teach in an inclusion class which is where general ed and up to 6 special ed children are in the same class. I have another teacher that works with me half a day and an aide that works the other half. So that helped when I wasn't feeling well. They won't deny you tenure because of sick leave, but you can lose your position and wind up somewhere else in the district. Hope that helps.

Re: Question for Moms who are teachers
Karen ... in my district, if you don't have tenure, then the Union advises new mom's to take only the 6 week maternity leave (if you have the days to cover in your bank). But I know of several girls who took at least 12 weeks. What happens is that they can push your tenure date back according to how much time you take off. It just gives them the opportuntiy to screw around with you if they want. I've never heard of anything bad happening to a new mom, but why take chances, they'd say.
All in all, you have to do what's best for you & your family. I wouldn't put off starting your family. I'm sure it will work out fine. FM me any questions you may have! Good luck!

Re: Question for Moms who are teachers
My district handles things exactly the same as Christine's. I also have never heard of my district giving a new mom a hard time, but they can. In the end, all they really can do is play with your tenure date, which isn't too much of a big deal, especially when you're doing it for your child.
Like Deb, I also had M/S at night, but my school is great with sending coverage to preggo's classes. If there was ever a spare sub in the building, she was sent to my room to give me a break. It was very nice!
