Question for people who tip, even if they receive poor service...
I'm not trying to start drama, but
Why would you tip someone who does a bad job? You already got stuck paying for a crappy service, so why do you give even more money?
yes, I realize that these people don't make a lot of money, but believe me, if they do a decent (I'm not even saying if they do a *good* job), but if they do a decent job, they will make out very well financially. I remember back in the day when I used to break my @ss to make good money. I always did a good job, treated people well, and got rewarded for it through good tips.
so, why reward someone who does a bad job?

I would leave a dollar just so they would know that we didn't forget to tip. But that's unusual.
I used to wait tables so I think I have a little more sympathy than people who have never worked in the business. It's a tough way to make money.

My mom and I did that once. We went back to the restaurant where I had my bridal shower. We went back to celebrate my graduation from grad school. We just did a small dinner (4 people) because it was 9 days before the wedding, so we couldnt' really have another party.
The waitress was HORRYIFYINGLY rude to ALL 4 of us!!! So, my mom was like, 'I can't justify giving her a tip. She really ruined your celebration'. So, she just left the coins that would have been the change- maybe 75 cents.
Anyway, the waitress chased after us and announced, 'Ladies, your forgot your change, and stufed a $1.00 bill in my mom's hand' My mom was FURIOUS, so she called over the restaurant manager (who she met when booking my shower) and he was FURIOUS and said that he had been getting complaints about her since she started working there and that we were right not to tip her.

i leave tips regardless although i dfont give them as big a one as i would have if the service is better. my parents did off premise catering almost my entire life so i know how much the waiters and waitresses make and how much they depend on there tips and people are entitled to bad days

Most of the people that I tip don't get health insurance or any other kind of benefits from their employer. They work 6-7 days a week with very little vacation. Tips are their livelihood.
If someone does a poor job, I make the assumption that maybe they're having an 'off' day. If it happens again, I make sure not to go to that person again or I go somewhere else.

We ate at Pizzeria Uno in Bayside. Had the worst Service EVER. The B!tch sat and talk to her friends the entire time. Took forever to get our food. Then we asked for the check and she dissapered we asked the manager for our check and he was so rude to us I pulled all the pennies out of my wallet and left her a note telling her how TO wait tables.
We ate at IHOP in Massapequa the old hag was so nasty my Best friend coughed and crumpled up the dollar. Ill leave something in a resturant! Just to be a biatch.

I do the same. I was a bartender for over 13 years, and trust me..leaving a dollar makes a stronger statement than leaving nothing at all. I also sympathize. but I also can be a harsh critic of service too....I guess it depends on what made me think the service was bad.

I've heard that it's worse to leave a BAD tip than no tip at all.

I like anything else wouldn't tip as much... But someone would really have to be really BAD to make me do that...in fact i think i only did it once. This may be there income but that is the point of getting tips...for providing adequate service...I tip more when i feel i have gotten excellent service...

As a former waitress, I definately feel the need to speak up. There were many nights in the restaurant when the kitchen was backed up and food taking longer than it should was beyond my control. I also could not always control how many tables I was sat with and if they were all sat at the same time. Granted, it is always important to acknowledge people regardless of how busy you are....but some things are just out of your hands and you have to manage the best that you can. I will sometimes sit in a restaurant with my fiancee and he will get so frustrated with service but he doesn't understand what is going on around us.....he sees that he is sitting without a beer.....I see that the waitress has just been sat with 4 tables at one time!! I know I am a little biased and believe me, I appreciate good service also but the only reason I would ever not leave a tip is if someone was BLATANTLY rude, which has never really happened to me.

I think 15% is a must. It is part of the price of the meal. If the server was good then you leave more.

I was a waitress too, and I think if anything it makes me more critical.
I know how hard it is. My rule is this- if they are doing a bad job but trying, I will tip normally. If they are doing a bad job and talking to friends, hanging out, etc., I will tip badly.
I think once in my whole life I left no tip at all.

Well, because I've worked as a waitress before and I know how hard it can be sometimes, I always leave a good tip. I can't tell you how many people left a BAD tip for me after I gave great service and was nothing but friendly, so I have sympathy for a lot of waitresses out there. If a waitress is blatently rude though, or we're literally the only table in the restaurant and the service is still slow/poor, than I do tip lower.

being a bartender as well, I expect when I go out to get the same service I provide. I don;t think I wouldnt tip at all but I do give less if I feel the service wasnt up to par. And I tip well since I know how I work my a$$ off to make my money...

Because I think everyone can have an 'off' day.
I would NEVER tip if I was treated rudely though.
ETA: I don't thinkI've ever been treated so badly that I didn't tip. I mean, it would have to take an obvious don't-care-about -you or-your-guests attitude to make me not tip.

ditto. i have worked in restaurants and know how hard it is...and it is hard. unless you have done it, don't knock it b/c it can be grueling and there are nights where you don't work hard and make great money and nights where you work your bum off and leave with crap. but people i tip, wait staff and hair staff...they have to pay for health insurance and there's no retirement and workman's comp sux so they need what they can get. i'm proud to have done that and i'm still not done with it, but it taught me a lot about money and the value.

I will always tip because I know what it is like to try and make ends meet. There are nights when I work my a$$ off making drinks and trying to entertain people and leave with very little $$$$. Friday night I made every attempt to try and please these 3 drunk women and still was stiffed, a group from England had a $100 tab and left me $5. I worked from 9-4am and left with $48( and my cab ride is $24) in my pocket. I understand how sometimes a person is just having a bad night and maybe their patience is strained. I guess I just have a different perspective because dealing with the public (especially drunken public) is not easy.

Heidla - what is customary to tip a bartendar? I always leave a buck after each drink but don't know if that's what is usual. I haven't been out for more than one drink in so long....... And am I being rude if I just have one drink and leave just one dollar tip??
