Question for teachers.

Question for teachers.

My Fh is gradutating from Grad school this May and is looking for a job. He has sent out over 10 resumes to all different schools, and has only received one call for an interview (he didn't get the job).
How long does it take for the schools to start calling?
He is triple certifieded in Biology,Chemistry, and general science.
He is getting very worried he won't get a job, so anything reassuring can help.
Also I heard a lot of schools wait until the budget which is on May 17th. Also a lot of schools are not sure which teachers are retiring.
Thanks!!!!!

Ten resumes is nothing, I'm afraid. If he's looking on LI he will be sending out many more.

He keeps sending them when jobs post on line. Nobody thought he would have a problem getting a job as a middle school or high school science teacher. I mean in his graduate courses he only has 15 people graduating in May with masters in science.

I would say to get a copy of the BOCES book and start sending resumes to all schools in the area he would like to work. Some schools will have postings after retirees come up or after budgets pass.

Many schools don't know where they will have vacancies until July. It might be a while.

Re: Question for teachers.

he definitely may have to sweat it out till august (which is actually when the majority of teachers are hired).
also, as has been stated, 10 resumes is nothing around here for teaching jobs. he should send directly to school principals, (regardless of if they're hiring or not), in addition to the district offices.
i wish him much luck - it's tough out there in the LI teaching world!!!!

also, wanted to add that many LI districts are now accepting resumes ONLY online.

has he checked out this site?

Re: Question for teachers.

everyone has given great advice so far!!!

I know my district is not doing ANY interviews until after the budget vote, even though they put their ad in the paper back in Feb!

As a first year teacher I have been sending out resumes also, (if the budget fails, my job is gone) and I havent been called for any interviews yet either...

Also, 10 resumes is defiantely not enough... last year when both FI and I were looking for teaching jobs I sent a paper copy of my resume and 3 letters of rec to almost every school district on the island. In addition to that I also applied to all of the jobs I saw posted in the paper. Make sure he also checks out the school districts web sites, a lot will only accept online applications (ex: 3Village, Longwood, Smithtown only accept online applications-- however it doesnt hurt to send the paper ones in too).

FI, who is a math teacher actually had to wait until August to hear that he was officially hired. It was a stressful wait, but it worked out in the end. He went on a ton of interviews over the summer too...

If FI is freaking out, like mine was, tell him to have a plan B... send in applications to sub. it takes a while to get on the subbing lists and at least it is a back up plan just in case!

hope this helps Allie!

Reading these makes me feel better! I haven't gotten a call for an interview yet either!!! Tell your brother to go to www.lieye.com and click on the schools section. they have a list of all of the school districts and their websites. Many of the districts only accept online applications but they are such a pain in the a** to fill out!!!!

Re: Question for teachers.

Most schools that I know of do the majority of the hiring in June or over the summer....which stinks now....but that's how it is.
I got both of my teaching jobs in June and July.....so it's worth the wati!
Good luck to him!!
Keep sending out those resumes and applying to as many schools as possible!
