Question for teachers
I am a teacher and getting married in November of next year. MY wedding is the weekend before Thanksgiving. I was thinking of taking a 'mini' honeymoon the three days before Thanksgiving and then taking our real honeymoon over Christmas break. Has anyone ever gotten married during the school year and then waited to take a honeymoon? Let me know your thoughts.I was originally going to take the three days before Thanksgiving off and then four days the following week, but not too sure what my principal would think considering when she first found out I was engaged, she said, 'I hope you plan on getting married in July or August.'

Re: Question for teachers
I just wanted to respond even though I am not a teacher. I don't think there is a problem with waiting at all. JMO.
I know a teacher getting married next April and they are taking their honeymoon in July. I know a lot of other teachers who planned their wedding around their vacation. It's totally up to you!
Even though I am not a teacher, we were considering holding off our honeymoon until AFTER hurricane season.

Re: Question for teachers
Friends of ours got married in November, and both are teachers. They had to postpone their HM, because he coaches basketball, and couldnt take off.

Re: Question for teachers
Hi jodi!We just got married Oct. 20th and are both teachers (in the same building no less!) We did take a HM right after the wedding. We took 1 week off, but we are both tenured. I don't know if you are or not, but I wouldn't suggest that until you are tenured. If you aren't, I would say that your best option is to wait until the vacation.
The librarian in our school (you may know her as she posts regurally on this board as marnles) is on her HM right now! She got married Dec. 13th (it was a Friday) and then waited a week to take her HM when we had vacation. This is her tenure year so she didn't want to take the chance!
I personally was very happy to tke the HM right away as both my DH and I NEEDED it! We were sooooo tired from running around and getting our new house ready for us to move in. It really is up to you.
Best of luck! Boy, I wish I were you..... I miss planning our wedding!

Re: Question for teachers
I am also a teacher, so here's my 2 cents...
If you are not tenured, I suggest waiting for a vacation, like Kelly said.
A friend of mine got married in the beginning of December (in 2000) and took her honeymon over Christmas. She said it made her wedding last longer!

Re: Question for teachers
Kelly,Thanks for the wishes. I am tenured so I am not too worried about that. I was just thinking if we went to Hawaii we would need a lot of time. Did you take off at all before your wedding? Where did you go on your honeymoon?

Re: Question for teachers
I work with a teacher who is getting married at the end of May, but is postponing her HM until July. She feels that she would be much more relaxed in July during summer vacation. As a teacher, I don't like taking time off of work because there are sub plans to be created and eventually corrected plus I worry about the condition of my classroom upon my return. In NYC, there is a crackdown on teachers who take time off either right before or after a holiday. Would it be possible to take 1-2 days off and stay in a nice hotel somewhere and then take your HM during Xmas? As some girls mentioned before, it will make your wedding last longer, and that seems cool!
What did you say to your principal when she said that she hoped that you got married in July or August? That comment would make me so annoyed!

Re: Question for teachers
I was married the friday going into columbus day weekend, and wanted to take off the day of my wedding. I was questioned by the assistant super b/c I was asking for a personal day before a 3 day weekend. he gave me the day, and was nice about it...just had to question it b/c of our contract.Husbands district is even more rigid...he didnt even ask, and he worked almost a full day and got friends to cover so he could leave a little early.
We decided to wait to honeymoon until June. We'll take off the first few weeks as soon as school is out then come back and find summer jobs!

Re: Question for teachers
When I was deciding on my date I was originally trying to plan it around school vacations so I wouldn't have to worry about taking time off for my HM. In the end I picked a date that doesn't coincide. I figured it is my wedding and it is a once in a lifetime thing so I'm not going to worry about taking time off. I don't get tenure at my job because I don't work in a district so I am just planning on saving up my personal days. Hopefully it won't be a problem. I haven't let them know yet so we'll see what they say when the time comes. Easter/spring vacation is 2 weeks before my date so I plan to use that time to get those last minute things done and I would like to take the Friday off before my wedding too. JMO but I feel like it wouldn't be a honeymoon if I waited to take one. But I LOVE the idea of a mini-honeymoon before the real one! That sounds like a great idea! If you are worried about what your principal will think I would definitely do this.
