Unfortunately DF is out or I would ask him, but I think that processor speed is what helps the computer run fast. The 40 or 60 hard drive is what stores all the documetns and programs so the more stuff you have the slower it would go. I would pick the second one, but really it comes down to the brand and reliablity for me. I like Dell for desktops and Sony or Toahiba for laptops.

Computer 2 is the better computer. The average person would never fill up a 40GB drive.

I am more interested on what brands these computers are.

Re: Question for the Computer people-Which is better

They are both Dell computers

a Dell Dimension
and a Dell Optiplex

The Dimension is the 1st one..more for at home use

the 2nd is the Optiplex..more designed for business use.

We have both and are trying to decide which to use on a daily basis.

My Mom has #2 and it seems to run faster then the one we use now which is #1

I'm not a computer expert and that's a bare min of info, but I would go for the 2nd one with more ram. Honestly a 40 gig HD is huge. RAM is really important. I recently upgradrd from 128 to 512 and it's like I have a WHOLE new computer. It brought new life to my 5 year old computer. I can run ANYTHING on it. All things being equal, I think the biggest factor affecting speed is RAM along with some of the settings, beyond a certain point I think it matters more than processor speed, because these 2 GIG+ processors are just so much faster than they need to be in most cases. I personally would not even attempt to use a computer with less than 512MB of ram right now, especially with windows XP.

The Optiplex line is their business/workstation line... and also their 'workhorse' line.

The warranty on the optiplex might be better too.

Go with the Optiplex. You can always upgrade your hard drive 10x easier and cheaper over upgrading the processor. But 40GB should be plenty.

We got the Optiplex thru my Moms job..they were selling brand news then didnt need for $250..
