Question for the fabric people .....

The dress I want is Silk Shantung and I had no idea what that meant.

Now I know.

Silk Shantung is a doupioni type of silk that comes from the Shantung Prov. of China.


Doupioni is reeled from double cocoons nested together. The threads are uneven and irregular. Italian Doupioni is the finest, followed by Chinese Doupioni and Indian Doupioni. Silk Doupioni is most often found in men’s and women’s fine suits and also dresses in lighter weight silk Doupioni.

I have no ides if the dress is made of Italian, Chinese or Indian doupioni? Does it matter?

Also, reeled from double cocoons nested together - does that mean twin silk worms? That's how I read it and wonder if anyone knows?

I don't know about the twin silk pods but I do know where the silk comes from definately matters. I went to a silk factory in Thailand and they explained that the better the quality, the more threads per inch, like cotton. Different types of moths make different threads as well.

That being said, if the dress looks and feel luxurious than I wouldn't worry about it where it comes from! It's not like you need it to be a long wearing item.

Unless you plan on wearing it for a night out on the town so often
