Question for the Moms!

Question for the Moms!

Do any of you have the Diaper Genie or Diaper Champ? What do you think? I really hear a lot of mixed reviews. I'd love to know if you all are using it and which type and for those of you with 'older' babies - how long did you use it? Thanks!

I have a Diaper Genie. It was a hand me down. Its OK. Nothing special. I feel like Im changing the 'bag' all the time. I think the Diaper Champ might be better just because you dont have to buy the refils. I must say since we started feeding Emma solids the air tightness is SO wonderful. Poopy Stink!

We have a Diaper Genie, and I couldn't live without it. We also heard mixed reviews about the two products (Diaper Genie vs. Diaper Champ), but we feel that we made the right choice for us.

The Diaper Genie requires special scented liners. But, that's what makes it 1,000 times more effective - the scented liners keep the smelly diapers at bay (thank goodness!)

However, I will say that nothing is fool proof, except emptying ANY diaper pail at least once a day.

The Diaper Genie also has a wide opening at the top, so larger, toddler diapers can fit without a problem. They even make more powerful scented liners for the toddler diapers.

I love this product, and I have no complaints about it.

We use the Diaper Genie.. It's OK -- I agree that it ia nothing special -- I also feel like I am always refilling it !! And The scented liners do not do that much -- I still find that it smells sometimes... But -- It's better than nothing !! Good Luck

Re: Question for the Moms!

Im not one for all these marketing gimmicks
I put poopy diapers in those baggies used for fruits and veggies from the supermarket, and throw it in the garbage. Have never had an odor problem.
We change the garbage at least once a day.
I refuse to have a garbage pail in the baby's room.
Its just unnecessary added clutter to the room.

I also dont think im going to have a changing table. I was thinking about using a 3-4 drawer dresser as one (just strap/screw the changing pad on) but now that we're finishing up his room, and we saw that we've lived without one for this long, why even bother? My sister has an expensive changing table. She has 3 kids in diapers and has used it MAYBE 6 months in all of their lives total. 'what a waste' were her words exactly !
DH also doesnt feel secure about it now that JA is squirming alot. Even though the child can be strapped down. I change him in whatever room we are in. I cant see myself going to his room just to change him.

There are lots of things that we buy because its marketed to us as a 'must have item' and in reality, you dont really need it.

Alot of them are cute items, convenient, and some things I do like to spend the extra money on, (like the mighty tight carseat thingie, the bath cushion, the snap-n-go was given to me, but its on its last leg and I will absolutely buy a new one ASAP!) ....but for some I really dont see the point.

Just my opinion

Anna,

I wasn't going to get a changing table either, we are moving into a 2BR, but the nursery is a very small bedroom. Now I'm thinking that I will register for everything, see what people buy us, and if someone buys us a diaper genie and a changing table, and I get all the other necessities, I will keep them. Does this sound like a good idea?

About the diapers, we have small garbage cans to begin with in the kitchen and bathroom, and are used to throwing the garbage out 1x per day, so I think I can do without a big diaper pail.

You said you change the diaper in the room that you're in, do you just put a pad underneath?

We didnt get a changing table either. Emma has a dresser with a pad on top. We do change her in her room 99% of the time just because you never know when she is going to pee. I dont want a puddle on my bed or my floor. She has peed several times with her diaper off but luckly she was on the table and we just took off the cover and washed it.

The only thing I would say is to make sure that your child is strapped into something if you change the baby on a dresser. I think you can purchase changing table tops for them. Babies can easily roll right off.
I have friends who love their diaper pail systems, and others who didn't care for them. I think it really depends. If you can save the $$$, then save it and spend it on something else- like a night out to dinner with DH

Nina, yep we just take out the changing pad and change him on the floor. As of now we have all carpeting, but im sure when we take out the carpeting, I'll be changing him on my bed.
The changing table wouldnt help with a boy peeing because his pee goes STRAIGHT UP no matter where you are !! LOL

As far as you getting the items, if you want to, go ahead and try them out ! you might like it and it might work for you.

Re: Question for the Moms!

Anna has a good point...something that works for me may not work for Anna, or Karen, or Elizabeth. You really just have to try certain things and see how they work for you.

We only plan to buy a conversion crib and a dresser with a hutch. I will use the dresser top as his changing station, just as I'm doing now with a small chest of drawers (at my Mom's house). A separate changing table is a complete waste of money and of space IMO. I keep his diapers and wipes tucked into one of the drawers, and there's never any clutter visible. When we were living in a small 2br apartment, I used our two nightstands pushed together as a changing station.

I have the changing pad right on top of the dresser. It is not screwed down or anything. I simply purchased one of those non-skid pads (for use under bathroom mats) and that holds the pad in place perfectly. I have never strapped Paul down on the changing table b/c I have never turned my back on him or walked away while he is on there. Personally, I prefer not to change Paul anywhere but the changing pad b/c I cannot control him from rolling around as much as I can on the pad. Plus, I don't want to risk him peeing on the bed or the carpets.

I use the diaper genie and think it works well. But, I have never been without so it may not be a necessity as Anna mentioned.

Thank you all for your input. I guess I'll register for it and if I get it, I'll see how it goes.
