Question for the teachers on here

Question for the teachers on here

How hard is it to get a job as a teacher's assistant at either a private school or a pre school? I know you need certification to be one in a public school so that's out. I'll be finished with my master's in about a year and a half but would love to get a a job in a school before then since I can't teach yet since I'm not certified. I actually called pretty much every local catholic and private school in my area and most didn't have openings, didn't know or told me just to send my resume and they would keep it on file. I have experience working in a private elementary school with a after school program. Are there just no TA's anymore?

My friend finished her undergraduate degree and is currently in grad school. I believe she is certified. She got a job as a teacher's assistant at a local elementary school working in a special needs classroom. Because she is just an assistant, she didn't need to be certified in special ed. She got the job by applying to be a substitute at the school. There was this opening so she got that job instead of being a daily substitute. HTH!

right now i would say it is very hard. Most places have hiring freezes. I would if you can just get your name into the sub system as a starting point

The pay would be lower...but you can always work as a teacher's aide. I know a bunch of schools will hire aides w/ o anything more than a HS diploma. It's good experience. I worked as an aide at BOCES for 3 summers before I got my certification.

starting out as a TA is a great experience....however the situations with schools is tough right now with money! you might want to try subbing first and still keep an eye out for TA positions....it's also a way to get experience and to get your foot in the door with the school.

i'm pretty sure you don't need to be certified to be a TA ....have you considered early intervention programs...they might have assistant or aide positions available as well..

have you tried the nassau boces job site..they have a great resource for applications online that a lot of LI districts are part of as opposed to paper resumes..

Are there any websites for the Staten Island or Brooklyn area? I'm not from Long Island.

the website is OLAS- (online application system for teachers) it's basically an online application where you input all your info ... so school districts can see....you can post a resume, cover letter...and it posts job opening and you apply right online and the districts send you a response about interviewing if they are interested....honestly it was a great resource and i got a lot of interviews from this site!!

I agree- OLAS is amazing (thats how I got the job I'm at now).

Also, def. look at Nassau BOCES website. They list all the districts. Also, go to indivdual districts websites b/c some advertise directly on their school website.

Craig's list has ALOT of ads for teachers/t.a's needed in staten island/brooklyn/manhattan areas.

If you want to teach @ a private catholic school apply to diocese of rvc or diocese of brooklyn (i got alot of interviews that way)

Good luck!!

Teaching jobs are extremely hard to find right now. Teaching assistant jobs aren't as difficult. There are many private school that use an assistant in each classroom. If your special ed certified you can def. look for a teachers assistant for spec. ed classroom. You dont necessarily need the sp. ed. degree but that could only benefit you. Good luck with your search. It's a tough time to be a teacher right now.
