I haven't been on the boards in a long long time. There are so many new names on here! Hope everyone is doing well.
I have a question about moving from industry into the academic world. I've been in industry 6 years but have my certification. I'm progressing along through the interview process, and am pretty sure I will be offered the position at the school I want. However, I want to see if I can negotiate my starting salary. Like I said, I have been in industry for 6 years so starting at step 1 is a huge paycut for me. At my company, I have taught, so I do have experience. I already have my Master's. Does anyone have any tips? Has anyone else attempted to negotiate above step 1?
my sister negotiated 3 years experience at her school
she had been in private industry for 6 or 7...but it was a profession directly related to her teaching job

Re: Question for those in the education field
thanks yabbobay!
i think my current job is pretty closely related to what i would teach. do you know how your sister negotiated? i've never been very good at that sort of thing. is this a district in ny, on the island?

Re: Question for those in the education field
I taught at a private school for two years before going into a public school and didn't get any credit for those 2 years that I taught in a private school.. I don't think I would try to negotiate too much.. they either will or they won't give it to you.. There are so many other people they could higher and pay a lesser amount to, so that negotiating may be a turn off to them.. what type of work are you leaving from? In some cases where they do give you credit for past experiences, I have only heard actual teaching in a school with age appropriate children

Re: Question for those in the education field
hi nikki!!! yeah, waiting to hear is the worst part, and 1/3 of all budgets failed, including the district i am hopeful for. but we'll see. i'm not looking to negotiate all 6 years of work experience as 6 years of teaching experience, but hoping to jump up a bit. the financial hit will be really tough on me, and i have a mortgage to pay! but we'll see.
nikki - what district are you waiting to hear on? did their budget pass? how are your wedding plans coming along? have you spoken to k lately? she and i have been playing phone tag since her birthday, believe it or not! i still don't know how adam's wedding went the day after the snowstorm!
