Question for those that have ever received a Save the date for a destination wedding- please help
Hi.
We received one yesterday. It is from a friend/co worker of DH. The couple is getting married in May.
The Save the date requested that a reply be given ASAP as to whether or not you are going. Is this right?
I mean we have known about this for some time now, as we speak to the couple. We do want to go, but right now I do not want to say yes just yet in case something comes up. I emailed the bride to be today and she does want an answer.
She says that based on the response she gets those are whom she will sent the formal invite to.
I am not sure of the protocal for destination weddings, please help.

Some destination weddings need to know an approximate # of guests way ahead of time. For example, a cruise. IF you were having 75 guests instead of 20, you would need to book an entirely different package with a different room and different ceremony location options. Im sure there are many destination wedding that have similiar constraints.
If you are not 100% sure, I would suggest emailing her to congratulate her and tell her you wish you could give a definitie answer but right now you cant but then tell her by which day you would feel comfortable giving her an answer by. So that way you dont commit yourself to something you are not sure about but you also give her an idea of when you will have an answer so that is taking her feelings into consideration as well.

that does not seem right! We sent STDs, but we don't expect a response. The purpose of them, I thought, was to give your guests ample notice (make travel arrangements/lodging), and save the date for you (some still don't). You don't requre an RSVP, and then send only to those who say yes.
Maybe she needs to know since it's a destination wedding, and if that is the case, then send your invitations out in accordance to the date needed to blocks rooms/book.
You can always say yes, and when the formal invitation arrive, decline if you have to,,,right?

Thanks.
I did email her and told her that we will try to give her answer soon and that we are researching travel and hotel options.

She should send you a formal invite regardless. I think its totally odd. Is she testing the waters to see how many gifts she's going to get? {sitting shaking head}

Nora, I do think Stef has a point in her rationale about destination weddings being very time sensitive, however this will not be a cheap vacation. It's airfare, hotel, attire for the wedding AND a gift. I have to carefully research deals.

Before my mother got sick we were planning a destination wedding and though we did not send out STD cards to everyone we did let our families and friends know the date we wanted to get married on and where it was going to be. I asked if they would be interested in attending because the amount of guests is very important in deciding on what type of room to get, menu items, hotel rooms, etc. Some places also offer different packages that you can not get unless you have a certain amount of people guaranteed.
Because it is a destination wedding you can't go on the 15-20% rule of people declining. Out of 200 people invited only 60 might want to make the trip because of expense, time off ect.
If you aren't sure that you can go, I'd just let the bride know you are considering it and checking available options and you'll get back to her at so and so date.

we got a STD for a destination wedding sept for a march wedding...
it was more of a how to go about booking the trip to jamaica...
both families were pretty well off and the weekend package was too expensive for most of the friends...so almost every responded that they couldn't go...(it was $1300 pp for 3 days)
a few months later the bride found a better deal at a close by hotel...
even though they knew we were going (DH was laid off at the time) they still sent us a formal invite and I think the RSVP was a little more than 2 months before the actual wedding...
