Question for those w/ platinum rings

How often do you get it buffed at the jeweler? I've read every 6 months, and got mine in December, but there's this annoying scratch on the bottom of my e-ring, on the egde and I'm just itching to get rid of it.

You should get your ring polished every year...polishing too often will slowly wear out the shank (the bottom part where you have the scratch) and the prongs. BUT, you shuold have your prongs checked 2X a year (so every 6 months) and have the ring steam cleaned or ultrasonic cleaned to make the stone sparkle like new. Platinum does scratch, but that's part of its appeal...don't overpolish...you may have to re-set your rinig prematurely if you do.

I am doing it for the wedding- I don't want to do it too often- maybe once per year?

Will any jeweler do this? Do you have to leave your ring there? My rings are sooo scratched!

Mine has an eternity type band (with pave diamonds). Because of the stones in the band, I don't plan to do it very often . Platinum develops a sort of dullness that some people do not like but I prefer it as it sort of makes the metal look richer (hard to explain what I mean).

I brought my ring to be inspected, cleaned and buffed after a year of being engaged. I stayed there and waited, I didn't want to leave it there.

Yeah mine does it while I wait. I am going 2x a year....the first time (when the ring was only 5 months old) they looked at it, and the diamond was so lose it fell out before they even started....so scary, they said I was so lucky! It goes back right before the wedding for a checkup and cleaning!

I got engaged three years ago - my prongs are as tight and strong as ever. I've had my ring steamed several times, but thats it. Its as good as new - I've even been congratulated on getting engaged by people who then tell me my ring looks so new they assumed I just got it!

ETA: I also clean it myself once a week.

What do you clean it with?

I plan on getting my ring all buffed up for the big day. Will bring it to the jewelers the day before my wedding.

I only brought my ring to the jewelrt once ot check out the setting b/c it looks slihgtly crooked, but the jeweler said it's fine and it's set so beautifully he'd never touch it. It scratched the day after I go it an I've never had it buffed. If you don't want something to scratch, don't get platinum..that's why people buy antique silver, it gets a really beautiful, rich look.

I might have it buffed just once right before the wedding. You don't want to do t too much b/c you lose metal. Also I would NEVER let me e-ring out of my sight for even a second. If they won't do it in front of you, go somewhere else!

This may be a silly question but is there a such thing as over cleaning your ring? I have this cleaner I got from the jeweler, you dip your ring in this cup for about 5 minutes, you brush it and wash it off. I usually do this every 2 weeks. Can I ruin my ring by doing this? It's also platinum.

I clean it with Le Conniseurs (sp?). Its in a red container and I got it at Bed, Bath and Beyond.
