Right now, our plans are to spend 6 nights in the beginning of our trip in Kauai and the last 6 nights in Maui. FI seems to think that we should change it to 7 nights in Kauai and 5 nights in Maui. For those who have visited both islands, what do you recommend?

I don't think you can go wrong either way. Both are beautiful places to be for a honeymoon! (I did 4 nights Oahu, 3 nights Kauai, 4 nights Maui)

It doesn't matter much, both are beautiful. I did 5 & 5. Maui has more to do so if it it were me, I would spend the extra day in Maui, not Kauai.

if you're looking for more relaxation, spend more time on Kauai. If you want more entertainment, action, etc then spend more on Maui.
We're pretty laid back and LOVED Kauai (hyatt was magnificant!)- if we ever go back that's the only island we'd visit

That's a hard one. Like Teri said, it depends on what you want.
For activities, do Maui, for relaxation and vegging, do Kauai. You really cannot go wrong.
