question for you married gals..

I'm thinking of changing my wedding date from Aug 1 to Aug 2 then I can have a Saturday wedding...I'm curious did any of you have early ceremonies and then a huge time gap until the reception? If so, how did you fill the time? The church maybe able to give me 11am but cocktail hour doesn't start until 7.30...Suggestions?

I have never been to wedding with such a gap between the church and reception. It may deter people from going to the church.

We got married on a Saturday but our ceremony was at our venue with reception following. Our day was perfect but if I had to do it again, I may really enjoy the gap in between so that we could really focus on some great photos in multiple creative locations.

It depends where all of your guests are coming from. If I were near by, I'd totally go to the church, go home and get my hair done and relax before the reception.

That is a pretty big gap. is there any way you can change the church time?

I would like the idea of a bigger gap. We had a three hour gap and a lot of guests didnt come to the ceremony because of this (immediate fam was there), but I felt it would've been nice for more time to go to more picture locations and thats what a longer gap would give you. If you do the longer gap you may end up with only immediate fam at the ceremony, but more picture locations. You may also want to see how long you get your photographer for. I think they usually do ten hours.

our wedding was on a friday...our ceremony was at 5:00 and the reception wasn't untill 8:30!!!! it worked out great because a lot of people came to our ceremony straight from work, so they were able to take a breather & change & freshen up & whatnot in between....plus our ceremony was in suffolk & the reception in nassau. i wouldn't have had it any other way! u have no idea how fast that time goes!

whoa...i just realized the time gap ur going to have...it's pretty huge - maybe just a little to big! if it's ur last resort than do what u have to do...but imo, that is a LONG time...regardless of people coming to the church or not, that is a long time for YOU! u wont believe how heavy & hot those dresses can get! lol. if that is the time u have to do, u might want to consider having a lunch at the house or something???? just an idea

I didn' have enough time with 2 hours, so do what you want. Those people that want to be there will be there to celebrate with you!

i dont think the gap matters much IMHO...if you are going to the church you are going regardless and most of the weddings that i have gone to the church i always went home to change anyway...so the gap didnt play a role for me...i think for out of town guests or people who leave far away it could be more of an issue...good luck

IMHO, that is waaaay too much of a time gap. We had a 2:30 ceremony with a 7:00 CH, but the reception hall was a 45-60 minute drive away.

I went to a wedding where there was a 1pm ceremony and a 6pm cocktail hour. We stayed with friends who lived close by to the RH until the Coctail hour started.

11-7:30 is a really long time!!!!!!

IMO, that's too long between the ceremony and CH. Our ceremony was at 3, then we had our CH start at 6:30. A lot of our guests told us that was a long time, even though my ILs hosted a gathering at their home during this time.
It's hard because you want people to share the joy of the church AND the reception, but what will out of towners do during the down time? And what will YOU do during the down time?
Our ceremony ended around 4, so we went to three photog. locations before arriving at the RH around 6. We were tempted to wait to arrive at the RH around 6:30, but we had to be very careful because our limo package only lasted until 6 so they tried to charge us an extra $150 for those extra 30 minutes. We also had to be careful to not arrive before 6 because they had another wedding wrapping up and the Bridal Suite would not have been ready. Will you have your limos for the entire time of the break? If so, how much will they charge you? Will you host an 'in-between' event somewhere to help OOTs pass time time? We had some of our OOTs head out east to some vineyards, and they arrived at the CH a little tipsy. Some others went to a local restuarant and had appetizers, so they arrived not wanting to eat any of the CH food and just bellied up to the bar.
I hope this isn't too much info....hope it helps!

Re: question for you married gals..

Thanks everyone! I have to decide today what I'm going to do...the Church St. Agnes ( parents were married there) can't accomodate the new date, so I went to St. Christophers which is my parish and they have Aug 2nd at 3pm, cocktail hour at Chateau Briand wouldn't be until 7.30pm but I'm scheduled to have a mass. My whole reason for wanting the change is so more people would come to the church and Saturday feels liek a wedding day...I think i'm over thinking this, I'm driving FH crazy!!! I haev som many people telling me to leave the plans alone, that I'm almost ready to do that..So confused

Re: question for you married gals..

My cousin had a 5 hour gap between the church and the reception..
She invited all the guests that came to the church to go back to the mothers house for finger sandwiches and cocktails. Well, lets just say....with that 5 hour wait.....people were very druck walking into the Reception hall.

Not so sure that was a good idea on my cousins part to serve drinks at the house.

and by the way.....i was one of the drunk ones walking

Thats a really big gap. If you are going to do something like that, and you are going to have OOT guests, or even guests that need to drive an hour + to get to your wedding, you are going to have a lot of people that don't come to the ceremony because they are not going to want to drive back and forth or try to find something to do for 6 or 7 hours.
Maybe you can have your parents have something at the house for these people?
