Re: question for you who have closed on a house
The previous owner should call to cancel phone and cable. Electric gets transferred along w/h20. Gas needs to have a new account opened and lines checked. Oil is cancelled and you have to have a new contract. It is in your best intrest to follow up on all of the companies that you choose to keep from old owners. We switced oil companies and had a boiler check up and contract from our new carrier.

Re: question for you who have closed on a house
we don't have oil, so it is just the gas/electric and water that i was wondering about. thanks for your help. we aren't moving in right away so i am not too worried about the rest yet. the woman has already left.

Re: question for you who have closed on a house
We had to call each of our utility companies and have the account set up. No lawyers or anyone else, the previous owners accts were either closed or cancelled and we opened our own.
Electric Water Cable Phone Oil
Its really pretty easy. Good Luck!

Re: question for you who have closed on a house
I have never heard of a lawyer setting up this - how would they know what options you want and billing plans and such?
My owner called to have things turned off on a certain day and they let me know they did that. So I just called the utilities and cable company and setup my new accouts.

That is exactly what we did. They turned the stuff off on the 22nd and we set it to be reactivated on the 23rd so we could start working in the house.

Re: question for you who have closed on a house
The previous owner told me when they were cancelling services and I called the utility companies and they switched things over the following day.
