I see a lot of girls who are ready to send out invites are JUST making their guest lists and freaking out cause they have SO many people to invite...
FH and I put together our list before we shopped for venues. It was the first negagement related thing we did after the actual proposal. Otherwise we would have had no idea what size room to book or what kind of guarantee we could make.
How did you girls figure out what kind of venue/size room you needed? Did you do what I did and make a preliminary list? Of course by 9/2011 our list is gonna change a little bit, nw coworkers, friends gone by the wayside, but 90% of it will be the same.
Or did you use some other method before you went venue shopping. Did you just guess?
I just don't understand how people are all of a suddent surprised with the size of their guest list.

Re: QUESTION
we made one before going..a pre lim one...it has changed but no major surprises...we planned on having more just to be safe...
what if you book a venue that can only hold 150 and your list is at 300...i think you have to have some idea...right?

Exactly, which is why I ask the question. That's exactly what we did, I didn't see any other way to venue shop....

Re: QUESTION: guest lists
My cousin got married in April so i took her list (faily wise) added my dads side, fh, and friends and went from there Once we new the minimum we could have then we decided wha the max we wanted. Minumim we could have was 200 bc of the people we had to have then the max we wanted was 250. I defiantly wouldn't have looked with out the list first

Re: QUESTION: guest lists
i made a list for my side. he didnt. he doesnt have a big family so we pretty much just winged it. We had to raise our minimum for the room we wanted, so more isnt a problem for us

Re: QUESTION: guest lists
We did what you did. The guest list was first thing. Then as we shopped for venues, we went with what we could afford.

Re: QUESTION: guest lists
i was pretty shocked after i made my final list... we booked our hall based on our starting list, which was for our engagement party. we had 120 so when we went to the halls we told them that price. its just a shock when you make that FINAL list. plus inlaws and parents always throw in curveballs and you always remember this person and that person. plus a two year engagement changes a lot. job changes, new fam memebers, etc.
that was very smart of you, but believe me even after i made the first list it changed 100 times. no matter what in planning things always come as a shock from time to time.
if yours stays and your not surprised just be happy and feel totally lucky girl!

Yeah, but your changes shouldn't be so drastic that you're worried you're not going to be able to afford the guests you have to invite... like, that should have been considered already Looooooong before you send out invites. So I thought. That was my point I guess.

Re: QUESTION: guest lists
We made our preliminary guest list pre-looking for halls. I told FH that was the first thing I wanted done. It didn't have to be completed with addresses and whatnot but I wanted a number. So once we did that (even though his side still wasn't fully complete) we went to look.

Re: QUESTION: guest lists
honestly, we still dont have a complete guestlist. FH still has one more group of people to list. What we did was find a hall that could hold 300. . We knew the guestlist was going to be big and we would have no problem inviting 300 people. we actually made the place bump upp the guarantee from 175 to 225 so they could lower the price. we know that even as of now with that one group of friends missing, we still have wayy over 225, so there would be no problem. Our problem will be keeping the guestlist under or around 300!

Re: QUESTION: guest lists
We had a rough guess of 150 initially when we visited the first few halls. As we went along we made a 'solid' list of invitees so that by the time we booked our RH we had a pretty good sense of exactly how many people would be coming. The list has changed a little bit, but more by exact names rather than numbers. I'd also encourage you to have an A list and a B list if you don't already

Re: QUESTION: guest lists
we made a tentative list of people we MUST have... and worked off that when looking for venues... it made the most sense...

Re: QUESTION: guest lists
We created the preliminary list before we started looking at venues. Like a few other girls said, I'm sure the list will change a little over the 20 months but for the most part it will be the same. I don't think I would have been able to even look at RHs without a fairly accurate count.

Re: QUESTION: guest lists
we made a preliminary list and worked off of that. we could never have visited any halls without knowing the number of people we would have and that the RH would hold. that's also one of the first questions the banquet manager's ask

Re: QUESTION: guest lists
We don't have large families, and we didn't want a ton of people we barely knew. We aren't letting our parents just invite random people. We estimated we could have 90-100 people, and the RH gave us a 100 minimum. We don't want a bigger wedding!
