congratulations!! you could start by buying the 'LI Wedding Sites & Services' magazine (in most supermarkets/newstands) to peruse reception venues amongst other vendors.....or you can just start researching online (they have a website too). but first and foremost......ENJOY BEING ENGAGED!!! I have to say I didn't dive into planning 100% for about a month, it's nice to just soak it in first. Enjoy!!!

start by booking ceremony than your reception hall..i thought i had plenty of time until i went to a food tasting and asked my hall what dates for nov 08 do u have availaible and he only had 1 sat night and 1 sat day left...i was so shocked so we quickly booked... u need to also think about how many people u will be inviting so that u can choose a reception hall being as they require a minumum amount of people in the rooms... good luck and after u do this u have a few months to relax and enjoy being engaged...

Well since you are looking to have the wedding of fall of next year... I would immediately begin looking at RH's, You can actually do alot of research online and by lookin in mags of places and weed through them so you dont visit 30 RH's cuz you really dont have the time to do that!

After thats all booked, do you're other biggies: dj/band, photo, and video ... Those book up pretty fast also!!!

After that, I believe you can relax for a lil bit!

First, breathe!!!!!! This is a VERY exciting time and you want to be able to enjoy your engagement before jumping headfirst into wedding planning. It's going to get stressful at times but as long as you keep your priorities straight (meaning remember what the day is truly all about) you should be able to enjoy this experience!!

Now, I would sit down with your FH (future husband) and have a little chat. Talk about what the 2 of you envision for your wedding day. Start simple:
How many people, small and intimate or big and lavish affair?
Time of year? You said the fall, September and October are big wedding months so things can be pricey. November might be less expensive.
Do you want beach front, country gardens, a winery, NYC loft, mansion/castle?
Will you be getting married in church or having a civil ceremony?
Who's paying for what? Are your parents going to contribute, if so how much?
Basically, lay down the foundation and start talking about a budget. Once you know what you've got to work with then you can really get started!!

HTH!!! And we're all here to help so ask away!!

Enjoy every minute of planning because it goes soooo fast!!! I've been engaged for almost 2 yrs and I remember when we set the date, everyone was like 'why sooooo long away?'....And here I am, a little more than 9 months to go and I'm just starting to look for my dress....We still have flowers, limos,BM dresses, tuxes,HM,invitations and many more!!!
So once again....ENJOY this time!!!
Try not to get overwhelmed....=)
And CONGRATS.....Best Wishes!!!
This website helped me soooo much....So feel free to ask as many questions as you may have....
HTH!!!

Re: Question number 1 of 6million

first thing to do is find your reception hall....after that, then you can begin the rest!(since every other vendor will need the actual date)...this site is wonderful for planning. As for a wedding organizer.... some girls just do looseleaf in a binder with tabs and it works out great for them - i however NEEDED a guidline! I got 'The Ultimate Wedding Planner' (or organizer???) from borders...it's baby blue if that helps! It's pretty thick with guidlines, timelines, and even has an accordian file folder attatched to the back. Best thing ever! Anyways, so you need to start 'hall hunting'!!!! ....you can look on here under the reception venues, or pick up the 'Locations (sites&services) magazine...again u can get it usually at borders, barnes&noble or bigger magazine stands(maybe even eckerds??). It has every reception hall in new york along with their price range, what they offer etc. It helped me a LOT! so good luck! anything else just post post post!

AGREED!!!! we booked our hall immediately (after we decided what we wanted and how big our guest list averaged out too) but after that, we didn't do any major planning for a month or more...it was nice to just enjoy it

definately agree with the other girl who said enjoy being engaged..sometimes amidst all the planning you forget to enjoy yourself and the important reason why you're engaged! But definately try and look at halls first (they book faster) and where you will be having your ceremony (if not at the hall)..then after start looking at other vendors- dj and photography book fast so try to do that before the rest of your vendors..the engagement photo shoot is usually included in your package with your photographer..so wait to do that until you have booked a photographer..hth

Congratulations on your engagement!

Definitely enjoy being engaged- this is such an incredible time. Once it's soaked in, the first thing I would do is set a budget. Without this, it's going to be hard to plan. Once a budget is set, pick some dates- if you're aiming for fall of 08 you need to have a few dates in mind since many places are booked/or will be booked soon. Book the church/synagogue/ house of worship and reception hall. Then you can move on to photographer, band/dj and flowers.

Good luck!
