I AM GETTING MARRIED IN A CATHOLIC CHURCH AND I WAS WONDERING IF I HAVE TO WEAR A WRAP TO COVER MY SHOULDERS. I JUST GOT INTO A HUGE ARGUMENT WITH MY MOTHER OVER IT. I DO NOT WANT TO WEAR ONE. SHE SAID ITS OUT OF RESPECT FOR THE CHURCH. SHE SAID IT IS A RULE. I WAS WONDERING IF ANY ONE ELSE HEARD OF THIS. I THINK IT IS DUMB AND WILL RUIN MY DRESS. WHAT CAN THEY DO KICK ME OUT? ITS RIDICULOUS. PLEASE GIVE ME SOME INPUT ON THE SUBJECT THANKS :) ERIN

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
I have been away from the catholic church for a very long time (FH and I are methodists now) but I believe it varies from church to church. I would call yours and find out where they stand on this.

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
I think it depends on the individual church- we spoke with three (we're Catholic also) and none of them had that restricion, but I have heard of other churches wanting shoulders and cleavage covered.

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
it depends on the church and the priest who is marrying you. my priest requested it but to be honest i didnt mind there will be plenty of time when your dress will be un covered the rest of the day. i was also married in january and it was freezing lol so i was glad i had something on over my strapless

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
most churches don't carry that restriction anymore. My mom is freaking out that my shoulders will be bare too, but there's nothing I can do!

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
I have heard some churches put the resticition on...I personally can't see how they can tell us what we can & can not do considering we are the ones paying $$ to use it...I know my church does not have any restrictions on this

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
I am not sure how the catholic rules are but my fil was a bit concerned about my shoulders in the Greek Church ( he's major old school)
ANyway, assure them that your veil will be over your shoulders - and they won't be fully exposed
good luck

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
Don't ask the church- just ask the priest who is doing the wedding. Different priests may tell you different things, depending on whether or not it is a 'rule' in that particular church or if the priest has his own opinion about it.

hey erin , to be honest i know of a few church's that you do have to wear something to cover your shoulders if you have a strapless or offthe shoulder dress..
i asked my church and my priest said he really didnt care. i also asked about the color red cause i know a few chruch's do not let you have the color red because it is evil lol and my priest also told me that he didnt care about that .. he did say alot of church's are very strick about that so i would ask your church

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
I agree with speaking to the priest that will marry you. Every priest is different, but most churches don' t care anymore.

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
I think it depends on the individual church. You could call the church.
I got married in a Roman Catholic Church and I wore a strapless dress and it was fine.

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
I was just married in a Catholic Church in November and I wore a strapless dress. I believe it is up to the priest. I'd ask him.

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
I just had this talk with my future SILs. One of them told me how it was a scandal that she wore sleeveless to her August wedding - I want to go strapless too. Keep us posted on what they say. I knwo, wearing a shawl or bolero jacket over the dress ruins the image you had of it.

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
You should ask the priest at your church. Our priest was very laid back and didn't have any clothing requirements....

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
I don't think you have to but I tend to agree with your mother about the respect thing. Definitely discuss it with the priest who is marrying you. IMO I wanted to cover my shoulders so I got a shawl. Check with the church and if they don't have a problem with it, it is your decision.

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
Thanks everyone for your input!!! Well I feel alot better knowing that it is really up to the priest. A very close family friend is doing our ceremony. Today my mom didnt seem to care as much as she did yesterday. I also let her know that my veil will cover my shoulders. thanks again to all that wrote in!! :)

Re: QUESTION ON CHURCHES
Macgirl- I also had a close friend do the wedding and that's why I said ask the priest. We did not even see anyone from the parish pn my wedding day, except for the sacristan, who did not even talk to me before the wedding, just to my husband. Don't worry about it.
