Question on Hand Cancelling!!!

So im a little confused at this..

The post office near me told me they will hand cancel my invites, but the clerk was telling me, the invites still go thru the sorting machine, so he was like i dont know why girls always want to hand cancel the invites becuase they still go thru the machine. so im confused, what is the big deal with hand cancelling?

I'm not sure what he means by going through the machine. I hand cancelled mine but when they arrived at my parent's house the only ink mark on them was the hand cancel stamp. Also, the invite arrived perfectly and the ribbon on my invite wasn't crushed so I don't think mine went through a machine. Maybe they still put them through the machine at that post office in particular?

I went to the post office in Carle Place and they did not put them through a machine. We hand canceled them ourselves, and while we were there we were talking to the people there and they assured us they do not go through the machine UNLESS you mess up the stamp when you cancel them (then they have to put it through).

However, I went to a post office in the city to mail a second round invitation, and this B#@$% that worked there gave me a big attitude and told me she was going to run my invitation through the machine anyway. I told her if she was going to do that, then I want my invitation back and I would go elsewhere. She proceeded to stamp my invitation and run away with it telling me that now that she already stamped it, I wasn't getting it back! I wanted to chase her down and knock her teeth out!

They were really nice to me...
He was saying that the machine they go thru is a sorting machine. They dont go thru the machine that adds the extra ink mark ont he invite BUT that all the mail has to be sorted thru the machine that they dont physically sort mail.

I think the post office you went through was giving you a hard time.

My dad did the hand canceling for us (thanks, dad lol) and none of them went through a machine.

So im about what that person means

ETA: Just saw your other post. The sorting machine does make sense. I think larger post offices do that but not all. Maybe try another one?!?!

The sorting machine makes sense. The canceling machine feeds your invitation through in a way that can crush or tear it if it is thick or has any embellishments. It has to 'read' the postage and stamp it so that the stamps can't be used again. For whatever reason, it can destroy your invitation.

which post office in the city?

when i was sending out my STDs, i wanted them hand cancelled.

i got this nasty woman that told me post offices aren't allowed to hand cancel things and she'll make an exception this one time.

The post office at Grand Central is THE WORST! I have had so many run-ins with them. I swear if they didnt have a police station in there I would have ripped this one biyatch over the counter. I hateeeeeeeeee them!

oh no, the one on 55 and 3rd is the one i went to but they were so nice to me. It was an indian lady and the guy that walks around assiting you,.

My FH was at the lexington one and he said a bride went to hand cancel but they told her NO.

I think it saves them one machine instead of 2

HAND CANCELING

if you dont hand cancel, the the envelopes will go through a machine. It marks it with the bar code ... those black strip things

HOWEVER sometimes invitations to weddings are too big or bulky, or they have ribbon and are all fancy schmancy -

Brides dont want it to go through the machine

I hand canceled mine, cause the red stamp they used was prettier and I didn't have to worry about my delicate invites getting torn open in the machine.

some post offices just are LAZY and don't wanna take the extra time to and stamp it, the would rather just put it through the machine.
